I swear I am not specifically seeking out Yugoslavian films... they just seem to be sticking to me these days... so here is yet another one - Spare Parts. OK, I am using the term Yugoslavian loosely here, as this one is really Slovenian. Some of you might remember Peter Musevski as well played father in Slovenian Girl... aka "A Call Girl". He has that quiet and assuring presence, his demeanor radiates the sense of decency.
Then what on Earth is he doing in Spare Parts, running human trafficking ring? Can a good person be committing such deplorable acts, knowing full well what fate awaits some of those unfortunate people he carries across the Italian border in his van?
It was difficult for me to step over that conflict. Even harder it was to see his young partner continue in that awful trade, after showing some undeniably human traits.
You might like that film... you might write it off as the product of movie industry that still has long way to maturity, but I think it is worth a look.

deplorable, they cannot be decent.
That said, it is very easy to look at history's ugliest events, or shocking criminal acts, and think you'd never participate. Unfortunately, that isn't where reasoning leads us--- or at least, the vast majority of us. That's why politics is so important: once an evil system is in place, most people will follow. There is a famous Yale psychology test that showed how dangerous authority can be.
...with people feeling they are being neglected, left to their own devices, that pushes the participants over the edge. It is purely the survival game.

Country is no more, however, if you look at the people and arts, lines are very, very, blurred. Even today number of movies is made with actors and directors from few ex YU countries, having similar subjects and similar overall culture. Look at the musicians, you have everyone everywhere.
Also, how would you call movie made in YU while it existed?
Interestingly, how would you caracterise performance of Serbian (that lives in US), Macedonian, Bulgarian and Indian (who lives in US) perfrming version of Serbian song in Croatia?
Or Muslim performing in Croatia a song written by Serbian about Muslim girl?
.
Share a bowl of grits with someone you love tonight.
