Great finale. Couldn't imagine watching it if you haven't seen the other seven first though. Allan Rickman (Severous Snape) stole the show though, expanding his character to show strong emotion other than the usual scowling and fuming.

Follow Ups:
1) Love Helena Bonham Carter's owning of the role of Bellatrix. Better than the book! She has an almost Manson Family-like air about her.
2) Snape's vital role in the saga got short shrift in the film. Changed the whole tenor of his character, made me feel let down.
3) Loved Raif Finnes' switch from invincible to vulnerable and how he portrayed "You Know Who's" false brovado toward the end.
4) Emma watson was very good at protraying Hermione's relentlessly striving for competence at everything she does. I think you got afeel for how hard Hermione tried to do the right thing at all times.
5) Neville's change was nice. My wife was struck by his sense of relief and inage of what self-discovery looks like.
6) The scene where Harry puts his face into the, was it, Bowl of Augury, was weak and could have used 5 more minutes to tell a better story.
7) They did a good job with Draco's cognitive dissonance.
8) I love the Weasley's, but when Mrs. Weasley finally goes off on a certyain character who was trying to attack her daughter, my prevailing feeling was, "Hey, lady, where was that intensity 30 seconds ago when you were also figthing for life and limb?" It was an odd time to see her turn up the volume rather than unleash hithertofore concealed power.
9) I would have liked more of Hagrid recruiting other species to the fight to counterbalance the bad guy's giants and spiders. Hagrid was a critical element in the book plotting.
10) I love Maggie Smith.
All in all, alot of fun, and I am merely quibbling.
1. Yes, all the British Actors are superb indeed! She even did a fair impression of Hermione acting as her.
2. Wholeheartedly disagree. I thought it did justice to the book and showed some excellent acting chops on the part of Allen Rickman. Neither my daughter or I could watch those scenes without strong emotional reactions.
3. Yes.
4. She was excellent as always. I am so glad she is over 18 now so I don't feel so creepy about myself admiring her. I really liked how her relationship with Ron grew and how he grew and she had to adjust to it.
5. Yes
6. Couldn't disagree more. Sure adding time would have been nice. But it was a highlight of the movie, if not entire series.
7. Yep
8. Yes
9. One problem though, you can really see these fine actors aging.

I wished the film would have shown more about how Snape had really plotted and suffered to undermine Voldemort.
I thought showing it via the bowl was fine, but it didn't feel like enough for me.
Wasn't it great reading/seeing these with your kids?
All in all, I give the series highest marks for the pleasure it brought us.
I have read all the Twilight books and seen the movies with her. I also am reading "The Hunger Games" with her too now.

My sons, lucky for me (?), they did not hit Twilight.
This week we are all reading "A Wrinkle In Time" together.
I kind of enjoy the chatting about what we read!
The Hunger Games was much more morose than I expected for a young reader book series.
saw it in 3D. Do not see this movie in 3D. Dark and no contrast. Yuck. The movie? It was ok.

...who is an avid reader and breathlessly waited for each subsequent book to come out after the first in 1997, when she was 7 years old, 14 years ago.She and my wife were both tearful at the end because of what Harry Potter has represented for them - her childhood - and now both are over.
For a whole generation.

finest English actor of his generation (Fiennes would be his closest rival). Now, he seldom does any other films. He was magical in "Truly, Madly, Deeply," as well as in "Die Hard."

And if he hadn't been in HP he would have been able to do....what? What movies did HP prevent Rickman from appearing in?
HP has given Rickman several years of nice pay checks. His performances as Snape are one of the highpoints in the series. He was hardly leading man material when he was cast in HP (at age 55) and he's gone on to make a few good movies during the HP era as well as continue his stage work - his career has hardly stalled. You might as well argue that Die Hard or Robin Hood ruined him. I'd rather watch any HP movie than either of those.
I think the HP series, while hardly deathless cinema, is entirely honorable.
In fact, I suspect Rickman's hugely popular turn as Snape may even introduce another generation to his roles in Truly, Madly Deeply, Sense & Sensibility and other films.
He's a wonderful actor but Hollywood has never known exactly what to do with him - like many other gifted British stage actors who never quite make it in American movies (Ralph Fiennes, Rufus Sewell), Rickman often ends up playing villains.
I don't mind. Rickman was never destined for major Hollywood stardom so I'm thrilled to see him in pretty much anything.
British actors look at parts in commercial films and TV as journeyman "work". The paychecks for the commercial stuff don't limit them but in fact allow them to be more choosey about what they do take (mostly theater, as in Rickman's case). Since Snape's screen time is relatively small in each film, it' not like the franchise swept Rickman away for 10 years. He's made interesting movies in this period - Perfume, Snow Cake, Love Actually, Sweeney Todd. He's wonderful in the TV miniseries "Something The Lord Made", which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it. Rickman is currently lensing Gambit for director Michael Hoffman along with co-stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci.
reading your commentary. As far as "lensing." Isn't that more correctly applied to cinematographers?

Those British actors WORK and remain great no matter the role, even when it's not up to "snuff", as such.
Too bad you can't see beyond your own nose in these matters.
Matter of fact I'm beginning to think you make Jimmy Durante's snoz look petite...

I'd call this a very sweet retirement gift.

The Bond films ruined Sean Connery's career, as well.
Same with "Every Which Way But Loose" and Clint.
Ruined his career. Ruined.

1) You have seen the Potter films and now can't get the image of Snape out of your head for any other roles Rickman may play, which is a you problem.
Or...
2) You haven't seen them and are talking out your ass, which is another you problem.
Either way, the only one harmed by Rickman's ruin would be you.
He seems quite happy and unruined in his interviews.
I think the cool part of Snape's role is that you don't see the full character 'til the 20th hour of the damned movie.
Looking back at the story, I think that character was very well acted.
He's had a tough time finding banks that will accept all that money. If he wanted a career with more "dignified" roles he would have passed on HP movies. So at best HE ruined is career by accepting this role.
That said I've never seen an HP movie, likely never will, so won't know how good/bad his acting was in them. I think he was good in Die Hard, can't recall seeing him in anything else other than Galaxy Quest which I couldn't/didn't watch all the way through.
He was perfect in Bottle Shock, good in Nobel Son, and pretty funny in GalaxyQuest (admittedly before HP movies but still an excuse to get in a plug for this under rated flick!)
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
I LOVE Galaxy Quest, which is one of the best films about fandom ever made, and better than many of ther ST films it spoofs.
Rickman can be quite funny - that droll delivery and straregically arched eyebrow can be profitably employed for amusement as well as melodrama. Then he can turn around on a dime and break your heart.
Rickman is always a hoot, weather it be drama or camp. A lot of his performances go un-noticed for some reason, 'Mesmer' for instance was not a bad film but went straight into the shitter.
I thought his turn as Col. Christopher Brandon in 'Sense and Sensibility' was great.
J.B.
It's delivered so well...the sense of angst and humiliation is so palpable.
I'll watch anything with Rickman in it.
Yes Snape is a character that will be difficult to leave, however I am sure he will complain all the way to the bank. After the success of the first few films, all of the actors became very well compensated.
I had seen him in a few other films, but he did not strike me as an exceptional actor. Fiennes on the other hand is excellent.
Best,
Ross
was indeed a star of the Brit stage. He also came over the pond to revive a role and won a Tony, doing so.
