earlier film is far simpler, but just as well-thought out and hard-hitting.
A younger man from a small village travels to Istambul to search for work while staying with an older family member that has done well as a commercial photographer. At first showing the man every courtesy, the host eventually becomes annoyed at the younger man's inability to find work; meanwhile, his own life is undergoing crises on every front, i.e. familial; professional; personal, that increasingly upset him and create tension.
I have read two reviews published in major publications: in each instance, it was obvious that either the reviewers hadn't seen the film at all or else had slept through it; both had shockingly incorrect information.
At any rate, this is an excellent film, exploring, like "Last Tango in Paris," the alienation that can beset single men in their late middle-years.
The acting and cinematography are excellent and, though the film does have some excellent understated humor that wouldn't be out of place in a Scandinavian film, the heightening tension and darkening atmosphere are harrowing.
The younger actor died before the film was released. He posthumously won several "Best Actor" awards from European juries.

But I am getting more and more concerned regarding your obsession with Tango - maybe you should start watching something wholesome... like Lawrence Welk? All your attempts at presenting Paul as quintessential middle aged male make little sense. He is nothing but a product of sick mind of an over-indulgent european pseudo-intellectual, whose real calling in life was watching young girls and boys masturbate. At 32 the director was already an old, old senile and impotent man.Be it as it may, Distant is indeed a fine movie. If anything, it reminds me of work of Antonioni - say, L'avventura.

little about this existential figure, except that he's inherited a broken down small hotel.
You completely mischaracterize his sexuality; I saw nothing about voyeurism, except regarding his girlfriend? That's pretty mainstream stuff! I think you're projecting a tad?
The film is a love story, a quintessential one featuring an aging man and a 60s-era type young woman captivated by this charismatic, enigmatic fellow. We see his gruff bravado, however, dissolve as he becomes enchanted. Her attraction, on the other hand, begins to wane as she realizes he's misunderstood her commitment.
It's a great morality tale, actually, for older guys who think young women are easy pickins.'
We at least agree on, "Distant."
SPOILER
And... why do you like it?
The photographer just wants to watch porno most of the time when he's home.
