I have to say that this go-around is very disappointing, especially judged against the first series. Flat script that doesn't have anyone looking for further development.
The first one with Harrelson and McConahey was some of the best scripting and acting seen on television. This one is weaker than dishwater with McAdams trying to be a tough cop and Vaughn trying so hard to look serious. These two are so miscast that Colin Farrell is a standout -- and to say that shows how low this one is.
You might like it, but your chances for that go up if you didn't watch the first series.
Follow Ups:
...Seems to follow the pattern of the cable crime dramas. Dread, followed by more dread. Good performances, I just don't know how long I'll keep interested. I can't see the franchise going beyond this season. Call it "Vaughn from Cincinnati." Over and out.
One always wonders if something of value was overlooked, so I gave this episode a shot. I can't tell if its getting better or if I'm just adapting to what there is.
OK, the jury is back, and the verdict is ... the latter thing.
Vince Vaughn is just hopeless in this. I keep expecting him to deliver fast-talk wisecracks and see a guest appearance from Owen Wilson. Rachel McAdams is nothing more than a Barbie Doll in any roll she gets, with those big sad puppy eyes that portray a life of zero pain beyond getting jilted by her prom date and never getting over it; just a ruinous selection for this roll. And the story keeps rambling with little gel.
Its a nice cop story among a thousand of such out there, but nothing special. In fairness I say that if the first series didn't exist, then this series would still be weak.
But the jury's decision can still be appealed. I have a new appreciation for Colin Farrell.
Farrell can be wonderful, he's just been sucked into the Hollywood spin cycle of too many films
too quickly with no one in his management team choosing quality over quantity.
We'll be waiting for True Detective Dos on disc.
True Detective was so superb I wouldn't think the follow-up could be half as satisfying OR
well done on any level, so it seems lowered expectations are a must.

Not of the same quality as the first, but I didn't expect it to be the same. It's a totally different location, different story, different cast.
Vince Vaughn seems to rub a lot of people wrong in his roll. I guess I just haven't seen enough of his movies to think he's poorly cast. Colin Farrell is great. My biggest gripe is probably that they try a little too hard to set a mood, although the third episode had a lot less of it, and it seems to be getting some legs.

I sort of get it. The whole California noir was done to death long ago. This seems to be a valiant attempt to pay tribute to all the familiar tropes, but also to wink at the audience. Sometimes the wooden dialogue seems like self-parody rather than self-referential cleverness. It's a fine line. But I'll give it time. While it is somewhat flat, it's not boring.
I wish someone besides Vaughn were in it as well.
I will watch a few more and see what happens
fingers crossed
I'm actually neutral on both Vaughn and McAdams which, in retrospect, is probably a bad thing in a show with such lofty expectations, lol. I'm a lot higher on Wayward Pines since the hook was set in freekin fantastic epi 5, The Truth. It looks like a keeper.

Yeah, the wife and I have one more episode before we catch up with Wayward Pines. The first couple of episodes had a Twin Peaks vibe and there were slight nods to David Lynch - the ceiling fan shot from Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me and the opening sprinkler shot from Blue Velvet came to mind. Not sure if the similar shots in WP were intentional nods to Lynch, but it sure seemed like it to me.
Anyhow, we watched the first episode of True Detective 2 together. The wife said "no mas". The dvr is still set though. If I continue, I'll have to go it alone.
...wish it had some early sparks to make it attractive to me. But, it's flat and dreary, IMHO. This has 10 and out, written all over it.
I think they waited too long to set the hook and agree, 10 and done :(
