I just finished season one and must say I am binge-ing on this. What a terrific collection of has-beens turning in great performances. Gould and Voight are spot on and I must say this is the best performance I've seen Voight give. Never thought of him as a "bad guy" but, wow, he can sell it. James Woods sold a great Whitey Bulger for several episodes and Rosanna Arquette was a memorable victim of Mick and his world.
These hipster scripts are rolling situation-to-situation dramas in each episode. I think it was near brilliant to have a series based around the life of a professional "fixer" who actually does bad things. Liev (the American Clive Owen?) is a solid fixture who has two basic modes: malevolence and rage. Great job on both.
I'm looking forward to catching up.
Follow Ups:
I like this show, too, despite some of the erratic attempts at Boston accents. Voight and Eddie Marsan (playing the brother who runs the gym) are the best actors in the series.
Based on your enthusiasm I rented two discs. As we watched, my wife had that "And why exactly are we watching THIS?" expression on her face? Soon she gave up, and I have to say - I don't blame her, as I don't have any desire to continue either.
Yes, maybe some good performances, but all the situations are to tired and primitive, it is painful to watch.
Too bad... I had hopes. Back they go... unfinished.
But, I seemed to have misplaced your address so I drank it. Sorry.
But you need to start practicing safe sex... I mean movie viewing... you seem to be catching all sorts of nasty bugs! :)
Beware: some of them Hollywood bugs are drug resistant! :)
It's you.

My wife and I love this series. Season three really hit the problems Ray's father causes for the whole family. I have to get the DVD of season one.
A crime family with more than its fair share of melodrama.
Season 2 had a couple of superb episodes. One episode, toward the end of season 2, has the Donovan family and extended members together for a reunion party of sorts. Ex-wives included. (ho boy) The episode serves to display the level and depth of the dysfunction within this crime family.
By the end of that episode we saw surreal behaviors and reactions with irony and comes-around-goes-around results on display. I thought it was a beautifully rendered encapsulation of the family's dysfunctional reality. It seems there can never be peace for the Donovan family. Even when they try to get along.
Other times I find this series a bit more earthy, trashy and revealed than I might have signed up for. But I did stay with it for its first two seasons.
Now I don't have Showtime, so I will miss the 3rd season. I've read that the series is already set to film a 4th season. They must have some viewers.

HOW dysfunctional can one group of people be? I thought it was well done and don't see how any of them can face each other the next day.
Voight just keeps getting better throughout the series.
