It came on tonight with a delay due to the aftermath of the Panthers/Cardinals post game show....but....well worth the wait if you follow my perspective.-Steve

...in Rolling Stone, I think, and he said these 6 episodes were all he was going to do.
But the first episode was straight from Cliche' City. Who talks like that after doing this gig for a decade? Seen 2 episodes so far, and the story is already all over the map. Only 4 to go, so I hope they straighten out.Duchovny said in an interview that this story could easily have been made for 12 episodes instead of 6, so I doubt there will be much focus. And if not, maybe that would be intentional. Hard to say.

Where did the original series end and this newer one begins ?
Story line: The X-Files ran for what.... 10 seasons. That's a lot of material to cut through. It seems that the writer/Writers have condensed the plot down to the essential bits. The core. We only have 6 episodes this time so it has to lead somewhere quick.
Prologue. The opening narration in Duchovney's voice. Mulder's missing sister. The event that defines his search.
As events unfold within the pilot episode, it is revealed that all these years he's thought it was an alien abduction that took his sister and all the other abductees he's documented. Now it seems that his sister may have been abducted by humans and for reasons not yet fleshed out. The mystery begins anew.
Yup. There really was a flying saucer crash at Roswell NM. And an alien was found at the crash site. The question becomes who is responsible for the cover-up? The Air Force? The Govt.? Or is it a secretive society, a group of conspirators populating high office within the government but unbeknownst to many. These individuals can pull strings that remotely control special ops military units to carry out murderous operations. The soldiers aren't privy to the conspiracy. They just carry out orders.
I thought some of the production values were decent. That anti-gravitic space craft was well done. Apparently both CGI and a set mock-up. Although the flying saucer at the Roswell crash site looks like it was made out of light weight cement....or foam.
A key witness is killed before she can tell her story. Those conspirators will do anything to cover their tracks. I suspect we will gain more clarity over the next few episodes. Who was flying that anti-gravitic aircraft that blew up her car? Evidently there was more than one of those craft made. The first having been destroyed in the pilot episode.
The cigarette smoking man. He has to come back. He's just too evil to die. He's too valuable an asset to the 'conspirators' for them to let him die. So they'll keep him alive by machine if need by. Cost no object. I thought the tube coming out of his throat indicates he's had surgery for cancer in the larynx. (just guessing) He survived -- of course. The face prosthetic...? We can only guess but it will serve to make him appear even more evil, more vile, more corrupted. The story needs a wicked witch to ultimately execute. I wonder if we'll dispatch him this time.
Walter Skinner's back. We need him to run interference with FBI higher-ups and thus allow Mulder and Sculley to conduct their bizarre and highly unbelievable investigations.
So with Mulder, Sculley, Skinner and the cigarette smoking dude we have the essential cast members back. And the truth is still out there.

...in the original "mythology" episodes there was a connection between cigarette-smoking man and Mulder's dad which may have had something to do with his sister's disappearance and all of the conspiracies.
Obviously in the new series the old professor (who in younger form conducted the alien autopsy) has the answers.
yes. I can't remember which season but that does ring a bell.
His own father. Was his father part of the conspiracy of just another innocent witness? I can't remember.
For another glimpse of the conspiracy and conspirators check with the first movie. In that film we get meet the higher ups and...what is it....? The conspirators are in some major preparation for something big. More discredited/killed witnesses. Alien space craft at the south pole. etc. Good performance by Martin Landau as the discredited/murdered witness.

This was a cheap 8MM version of an old X-Files with tired old actors who had little to say sleep-walking in a dense fog of all X-Files ever made.I could not believe how cheap it looked. Mulder and Scully did NOT recapture their belivability--well, none of the cast did. When Cancer Man closes it out he looks like he's already dead from cancer. Disturbing.
I'll watch tonight but miracles are going to have to happen.

...but the production values need to improve along with the writing.
I still enjoy seeing them back - like old friends.
I guess TV has changed in 14 years and the show maybe not so much.

If you were a fan of the old series these things all resonated with you - otherwise it would seem pretty disjointed.
Seemed like an Olive Stone script to me. In JFK there was not a conspiracy theory he didn't like. :-)

Carter must be related to you know who. He utilized everyone of his crap theories.
We'll watch it tomorrow. We'd intended catching the premiere in real time, but having just replaced our old Panny projector this week with a new SONY with low lamp hours we dived into the BD collection.
I can't imagine how the Sony could surpass it tho it's probably 4k capable which on your large screen will ultimately be a big benefit.

Thanks. The Panny has been dependable, but it's three generations back. Our new SONY isn't 4K, but it has active 3D, sharper, brighter image, theoretically longer lamp life (5000 in Eco. Mode) and it's a perfect interim unit 'til all the bugs get worked out of the new 4K tech.
The unit we snagged is the recently discontinued VHT-HW55ES (new 65 model from SONY replaces it). We got too good a deal to pass up (extra lamp voucher, two pairs of 3D glasses, full warranty, and price discounted by half as close out). Adding Darbee processing provides similar upgrade to pixel shifting 4K (faux k).
Sorry, that's off topic (got carried away). The projector upgrade is the first HT addition since replacing our old 4:3 screen with the Supernova a little over a year ago. ...I'm excited about the new X-Files series pilot too.

Glad to see it's back if only for 6 episodes.
The eerie music it starts with at the beginning made the hair on my neck stand up in anticipation.
