If my vote was the decider, this man would take home an Oscar for playing the Soviet spy Rudolph Abel. Just remarkable nuance and presence in his role. When he spoke, every word was well accounted for and timed to be exactly heard with economy. A great command of viewers' attention and anticipation. I found myself watching his expressions, waiting for him to speak.
I just watched this film. So much I did not not know about the Gary Powers spy exchange, assuming this film is factually checked out (Cohen brothers were co-producers). The effort that went into pulling that off, enabled by the remarkable lawyer Donovan, made the slim chances of success pay off.
Seeing this historic time when the Berlin Wall was raised, contrasted to our current build-a-wall inflammatory rhetoric makes me wonder if we have advanced at all.
Another great film. Nothing to criticize, except maybe for too many stone cold CIA profiles in the mix. The flavor of the times was more than adequately represented.
Follow Ups:
The entire cast of 'Spotlight' should get the award. 8^)
But, I would easily give it to Steve Carell for the fire he brought to 'The Big Short'.
...Tom Hardy in Revenant is my choice.Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight was also good.

Hanks, too, was, but we expect that from him.
