I have no problem making a speech about peace and getting along etc - and I am pretty liberal myself - but I agree. Enough of the constant politics. Can people not just accept an award and if you want to make some political point - make it subtle or a witty clever remark that is not on the nose.
I mean Spike can make a movie about what he wants to say. Let the art speak.
The reality is people only speak to their respective choirs - he ain't changing anyone's mind on who to vote for and the minds he wants to change or feels he needs to change probably aren't watching the Oscars or his films to begin with.
Although I do wish people would get along better - it's sad to see a lot of families break up over voting for which president.

My girl is convinced there is something going on between Gaga and Bradley.
That was her report from the show and all I need to know ..
Cooper is in the T. Cruise arena in other words in the proverbial closet.... Ever notice that his constant date is his Mommy?
Nah remember us Liberals actually have FUN in the bedroom unlike religious missionary position nuts like Tom Cruise.
More than likely he is getting nightly three ways with Lady Gaga and his wife Irina Shayk.
It's the other side that rants against homosexuals for 30 years only to be caught with underage boys in a bathroom someplace lol.
Closet boy Cruise do.... It's the hiding or denial that I find abhorrent.... Just be truthful about who you are.....
yeah but who cares about actors and actresses - what bothers me is when some church leader or political leader passes laws ruining the lives of people touting doctrine that homosexuals are all evil and then you find out they were gay all along!Bradley's life or Tom's life have zero impact on you me or anyone.
It's politicians like Republican (almost always a Republican) who is secretly diddling kids and are closet homosexuals all the while presenting themselves as beacons of righteousness. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/18/us/dennis-hastert-released.html
It's these screw-ups who ruin people's lives.

Nah, American society is not ready for that. And remember that Hollywood is an international enterprise.
Who cares as long as he is believable as a "real man". And my girlfriend's affection towards him is a proof that he is. His closet is his private thing and as long as he lets other people have rights to their closets I'm OK with it. I don't mind a healthy dose of gossip, hard to find a man who doesn't but:
AMERICAN PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW EVERYTHING.

Yes we do!
It's in the Constitution or something.
Wait... maybe I read it on a box of cereal ...

And we don't know everthing. Far from it. But when it comes to the Mueller report, and Russian interference in our elections, we have a right to know EVERYTHING.
If you've done nothing wrong, the report should say that. Otherwise, it's what you get for being around Trump World.
Here you are - no commentary necessary.
and shove it. In case you missed it this forum is about movies.
There are no politics in movies?

I hope you won't be TOO disappointed....
I'll be disappointed if much of the report is redacted, or if they try to shield people in the name of classification or bogus "national security" concerns. Mueller has probably done a thorough job and the people deserve to see it.
That's something new. All the press reports seem to point to the opposite.
AS for me as long as they somewhat resist to signal the virtue all the time they can take everybody and their mamas into the bedroom's ride. Live and let live.
On the positive note it's nice to see that celebrities still genuinely enjoy being celebrated.
I already saw the aforementioned duo perform and in objective terms it wasn't half bad for what it was (cheesy song in the cheesy context). Also my compliments for "the boobs" Must be a cultural difference in play but I find them to be a fine specimens against all the detractors on this forum. I must be one of the few who still remember what the real thing looks like :)))
My problem with people too far out on the wings of parties is that the plane winds up going in circles.I'm a Bill Mahar sort of liberal who calls out liberals. And abhor universities that ban right wing speakers from speaking. The point of a university is to have your ideas challenged and to listen to the speech of people you disagree with. I see this happening in Universities especially those in the US.
Nevertheless the other wing truly is the basket of deplorables and they run your country. Both wings suck but the right wing sucks more. (and we all know what they secretly want to suck too - which is why righties are all so angry - their religion demands the opposite of their nature).
I have been to many - shall we say - underground parties and all of them are social liberal minded people.
The right is home to the Bible thumping sex to make babies crowd - which is why they always seem angry and worship guns and jealously hate liberals for enjoying the bedroom.
I mean c'mon - look at 44 and 45. The former can attract a woman with personality and education and looks - the latter has to pay for it. Buy from a catalog - no one is doing the orange ape for personality or intellect. And that pretty much sums up the parties now don't it?

Proletaryat always stinks, but without it any change/reversal of cultural and socio/political order or trend is impossible.
Victor is a relict of the bygone era and he is not willing to compromise in order to please. I very much respect that and it doesn't bother me at all.
My tastes are way less refined and I'm not demanding of the movie format to be a higher degree art form. I accept that as a whole we are a class C or Class D audience and the movies to be successful have to reflect that fact. A burdens of a democratic society.
Actually I don't care what taste a person has - I know people who only like classical music and within that view the piano as the most "elite" instrument - all other instruments are inferior.
And yes some people only like art house films and are mystified by the "junk-food" marvel universe of movies. Although I point out a difference between film and movies - the latter I use to put towards Raiders of the Lost Ark - film I would use to describe his beloved 8 1/2.
I am happy to appreciate both - and I have no problem with people who like only one or the other - I also appreciate the folks who think all movies and films are utter dross compared to the obvious superiority of the stage.
Viktor sadly doesn't even rank as a good legend in his own mind snob because the mere fact that he lowers himself to even discuss the low grade entertainment drivel that is "film" even 8 1/2 rubbish tells me that he has low standards - Film may be a cut above movies but it is still merely spectacle of trash to the real snobs.
He has a long way to go to be taken seriously if he likes the Usual Suspects - how dare he? That is a Hollywood movie with American actors - lol and has a bloody Baldwin in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????? The worst Baldwin at that!?!?!?!?!?!
No - people who lack class and tact I will call out. I am friends with beautiful female symphony level violinist - when she criticizes the musicianship of Itzhak Perlman I am happy to listen to her critique.
Viktor - some talentless bum who spends his days insulting every actor and insults world famous musicians - when he has not once ounce of film or musical talent whatsoever?
Richard, I think "talenless bum" goes little far and is not warranted.
I'm absolutely a less critical movie/film/music lover than Victor and often wave at his denigrating comments as an entertaining bluff of a jaded dinosaur. The thing is that movies Victor does recommend or likes are always very good or excellent. No exception.
PS. How is it that there is not a single voice among those actors gathered there which represents a different than "official" party line?
They all conform and are as free as puddles on the leash. The 45th in his days didn't have to pay for it either and because he was rich, plenty of more or less respectful ladies were willing to lose their panties in the instant. The head of local psychiatric hospital told me that he is a communication genius and that he is not speaking to the castrated by modern education fools, who get drunk on the pseudo intellectual meaningless drivel. I'm a little skeptical since I could not stand to listen to 44 but he was a "looker" . The 45-th is out on both accounts but who am I to argue with the psychiatrists :)

Well I deleted my post because frankly there isn't much point to basically reiterate what I said. I believe if you want to critique art you should have some artistic ability yourself especially when you call a room full of actors people who can't act. Really not one of the people in that room can act?
So says the almighty Victor who has displayed zero talent.
I am not sure what your PS is about. I probably can't go too far discussing politics as the post would get deleted. As I oppose forces that are anti-education and anti-science and anti-choice then I probably fall in line with the unified liberal stance of most of liberal Hollywood.
Though I do not buy the premise they all speak in one unified voice.
And I still have a chuckle when Siri generates a more coherent speech than a certain president. C'mon people - this is just hilarious.
...because Siri is a form of artificial intelligence ? ..."this is just hilarious." I believe history will treat the situation more as an error of judgement if not a tragedy.
You state "I believe if you want to critique art you should have some artistic ability yourself especially when you call a room full of actors people who can't act." . With this you seem to be saying that a critic (reviewer?) of something should also be experienced/accomplished in that field they criticize. So an art critic should also be an artist, a music critic also a musician, a music reproduction equipment critic also a music reproduction equipment designer etc.
Well yes and no - take the academy awards - The voters who vote on the acting categories are actors, best director voted on by director. This is why people get confused when best director and best picture are not always linked - as was the case this year. The directors voted for Cauron for Roma - but the picture went to Green Book. Why? Because everyone votes on Best picture.
Do you have to be a filmmaker to evaluate film - no. But it would be good if the critic had some "linked" background to the arts. Perhaps a some courses in film from a university or an English Literature degree so that he/she can recognize symbolism or other storytelling techniques and to be able to articulate with some depth what is happening in the film. Roger Ebert for example did write screenplays and taught film at University so he's more credible than the average Joe Shmuck.
Evaluating musical talent - well a concert violinist is more credible at evaluating the musicianship of concert violinist than someone who can't play or read music. That doesn't stop people from spouting off.
I rarely ever rip the musical or acting abilities of artists even though I played music and took acting classes - I know how difficult it is so when people rip Kenny G - I kind of laugh - yes certainly - one may not like that bubble bath kind of Jazz music and they may be correct to argue that he plays a simple style of music - but he plays his set of notes well - he has circular breathing and he sells to his target market giving them exactly what they want - one could argue that he is the jazz equivalent of the romance novel. But I am not going to say he is a talent-less bum - let's see the people criticizing him do it better (or anything better).
This relates to "ART"
With non "ART" related things like reviewing cars, toasters, stereo equipment, hotel rooms, food - then no you don't need to be car designer or amplifier maker because these are tools to bring about an end result.
Does the toaster burn the toast or under-cook it? An SUV has a set of parameters that say a soccer mom might better be able to articulate than a guy who designs sports car engines - he may know a lot about engines but that doesn't mean he will better be able to notice how useful the cargo area is packing in 5 kids etc.
And with stereos - how well does it bring the musical event into one's living space. In theory a musician would still be a better choice than a non musician - and people with a wider range of hearing - 25 year old female pianists over 65 year old men who have severely diminished hearing.
Of course everyone can have their opinions - You can read a review from the most expert of experts and just not LIKE the film, music, amplifier, car or whatever.
And perhaps it's because as a teacher - my training has generally been not so much a person's opinion but how well reasoned that opinion is articulated.
I am pro-choice and submitted a paper outline of my top for a philosophy course - but the professor flipped the script on the class and made all the students write the OPPOSITE view - so the pro-life students had to write for the pro-choice stance, or pro-death penalty had to write the opposite.
What is the point of writing only the opinion you already hold. Both sides can get an A+ because it depends how well you can make the case.
So if someone wants to argue that all the actors in the room suck - or that Barbara Streisand should only make $200 a week or that Lady Gaga can't sing and on an on and the only thing you got is "because I say so" is kind of silly.
Numerous vocal coaches (expertly trained in singing and vocal talent) have gone over numerous singers in the industry. Some no talent peanut gallery nobody may have an opinion but it's about as good as the opinion of a very sick cow farting.
