Streaming on Netflix, this is a somewhat predictable, but still absorbing and enjoyable show, particularly if you play chess.

Rated 8.8 on imdb, it deserves a look.

I saw a review along the lines of: 'it will cause a new interest and sales spike in chess sets that will gather dust in closets after a few weeks'

it's not checkers dammit!

seriously, it's supposed to be a good personal drama, and I'll watch it

regards,

Definitely work a look. One of the better dramas to have appeared on Ntflx, posted on November 23, 2020 at 11:07:14

and a real starlette in the making in Anya Taylor-Joy. Bill Camp, in a small role as Mr. Shaibel, also delivers.

Love chess, played it all thru college. When I got to thinking I was pretty good, I'd run into a player who was actually good and be brought back down to earth.

One very minor bone to pick - when are we finally going to get a Russian character with a Russian name?

Seriously... Borgov is just as much a Russian name as Kissoff.

I thought Boris cured y'all's chess fever... :-)

I have yet to hear a bad word about this series: as soon as I get through a bunch of films, it's #1 on made-for-cable list.

My group - a bunch of rock n roll stoners -. My most vivid memory of that summer, anxiously awaiting results of every game. And Janice. But mostly the chess. It was an almost surreal event.

My father was a chess player and a fan.

My father and I had a... contentious relationship in those times, but I was visiting him at the time, on his remote ranch (in Brazil) and we played along, moving the pieces as reported by the radio announcer and then spending the day arguing about the moves. Neither one of us were good players, but we had a mutual interest in the game, we studied the various openings until we'd mastered six or seven "basic" ones.

BTW, the name Botvinik... , posted on November 24, 2020 at 07:34:49

most likely stems from the name of a popular Russian soup, made using leafy part of the beets - hence some jokes, as normally that part is discarded.

Smyslov's name, OTOH, has its root in the word "smysl" meaning reason.

No wonder Smyslov won. :)

I remember watching it broadcast by NY Chess club with live audio commentary from Iceland. We have a move, We have a move was the excited cry of the NY Grandmasters. Especially the one unorthodox move of Knight to Rook4 which Fischer played, a move that had never been played before and Spassky took for ever to reply.

She's excellent (but better in Q G's juicier role) the film is very good (my wife liked it better than the previous redo) and Bill Nighy plays her father.

She should have a bright future in film.

Anya Taylor-Joy elevates the predictable material. She is pretty mesmerizing - quirky looking with big inviting eyes and she moves the pieces like a ballet dancer. The melodrama is not too intrusive and the pacing is pretty swift considering they stretched this out to 7 parts (could have done it in 3).

This series is an example where an actress can transform fairly ordinary material and bring it up to a level where it "seems" much better than it is. She should get nominated for this.
