From the first ill-conceived song and dance opening through ever other number it was everything I could do to not walk out. I cannot believe this highly overrated piece of crap has garnered the reviews and potential awards that it seems to have coming. Sure, we have the permanently cutesy Emma Stone (who can't sing) and the Rock-jawed Gosling (who can't sing) enmeshed in a fantasy romantic drama. The only part of the film I like was the ending where the clock was turned back and run with a different outcome to the story. Outside of that, this film had nothing going for it except for . . .

No profanity, no sex, and no violence of any kind eing propped up by some clever dialogue. This film is aimed square at the deplorable audience who is tired of all the cinematic drubbings they get year after year. I didn't see anyone leave the theatre. People were riveted by the semi-clean fun story of two star-crossed lovers trying to make it work.

I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone. It really brings out the Krampus in me. There is NO chance of the Hollywood Musical making a comeback. At least I can breathe easy.

...I thought it was terrific and fun.

Great cinematography, sets, color and story.

Emma is a real star.

Krampus is right.

it was sappy but I loved it, tasteful and a tremendous production imo, posted on January 13, 2017 at 16:58:43

no sex, drugs, violence, profanity would be reasons to see it.

A movie aimed at thinking adults, who can actually function for 2hrs untethered to electronic gadgets.

Best,

Ross

So it got a lot of critical buzz, but I heard a critic I like say the leads have no chemistry, cannot sing or dance and the songs are forgettable.

My experience was quite different. The songs are quite memorable. If Gosling and Stone do not have professional singers' voices, that's part of the design of who they are. I thought their dancing was fine- no not Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire, but this is a different kind of movie.

I actually enjoyed the opening musical number quite a bit, but that was about the only traditional big musical production number. The rest of the music was small and intimate.

This is a tribute to the Los Angeles/Hollywood of movie history, filmed to show LA as a gauzy fantasy, with main characters who live for old music on record players and old movies on big screens. And a tribute to the old and out-of-style format of the movie musical.

I know the director called the Umbrellas of Cherbourg his favorite movie, and one who is familiar with that one cannot help but notice the great similarities, which I will not spoil. I really enjoyed the time spent watching this, and will certainly see it again.

Thinking? That's funny. Musicals don't think that why....., posted on January 15, 2017 at 10:38:58

They can hit a wide denomination of the public. No sex, violence, or profanity is the big seller here. The fact that the leads aren't accomplished vocalist makes their characters more accessible to the audience, IMO.

I wanted to leave on the second minute, but my stupid rule to always finish the movie won. That and seventeen bucks.

Remind me - was that a high school production? Sure felt that way.

LOL...I can't believe you publicly admitted you went and saw it at all. (nt), posted on January 15, 2017 at 21:51:55

Someone told my wife it was a good movie, and it played nearby.

Might even compete with the super-turd Titanic.

I thought there were some redeeming moments, not great, but at least not horrible.

She just kept shifting in her seat, mumbling: "This is horrible... this is crap!"

I would like to revisit Fame, I have fond memories of that one.

Perhaps also All That Jazz.

Is it a Weinstein film? He usually promotes them to the max.

is a DUMP, opening on an alley.
The cover of Cannonball Adderley Live at the Lighthouse
led me to believe otherwise!

...while watching the boring kaka on the big screen.

Bring your flower children friends with you.

What? They are all pushing 70? So much the funnier. :)

Next day NYT review: "I have never seen that much sex, violence and profanity in my life!"
