"Odd Man Out". How do you spell "torture"?

Sometimes too much torture is... ahem... too much.

By most standards Odd Man Out is a masterpiece, a noir that is almost too much so. But some will find its 116 minutes excessive. I know we did. After all - the main idea is not a complicated one.

How about a hint of plot, actors, car chases, murders, and boobies!

I usually don't like telling people the plot, I think it is more fun discovering it on your own. But OK, just for your ears - a wounded Irish terrorist is trying to survive and make it to his safety. James Mason in the main role, everything is darker than dark, it is gloomy and desperate.

I have never been a fan of Mason, but there are some other notable performances - you will not feel cheated. No car chase, but plenty of murders.

I rewatched Mason playing Rommel . . . , posted on July 7, 2018 at 09:41:52

about three years ago. I had to chuckle at him wearing that black leather officer's coat in the desert every day. Now, that wasn't Jimbo's call but it shows the simplicity of post-WW2 British war films. It does not hold up over time. And yes, Mason was a one-note subwoofer. We call that "leading man".

I saw that one, did not finish it. nt, posted on July 7, 2018 at 10:09:52

I age, but if I'm not mistaken there was a GREAT performance in that movie by Robert Newton as a drunken/obsessive artist who paints Mason as he's bleeding out? -- right?

You are absolutely right, he was one of the bright spots. nt, posted on July 8, 2018 at 06:00:18
