 10 days from the Academy Awards - what is your pick out of the nominated films:

A Star is Born
Black Panther


The Favourite
Vice
Roma
Green Book

I have only seen the first 4 but I will see the remaining films over the week. I have ranked the first 4 in order of my preference.

 I only saw BR and GB. BR was the best film I saw last year. GB was excellent.

If it wins either its time to stop making movies or all of the other movies really sucked.

I'm hoping Green Book comes back around. I'd like to see it.

 of the ones I saw, I'm going with Favourite and Green Book.
Favourite probably has an edge just for over the top outrageousness, creativity and overall resplendent filmmaking.
I won't kvetch if GB comes in first, however.

 Well I'm not a Queen fan and I still liked it so that is a plus.

I can see Rami winning for best actor.

The four films I saw none I would rank an A level movie.

 The general consensus seems to be that this is the worst of the nominated films. I sort of get the sociopolitical arguments for why it was selected and of course to attract younger people to tune into the Academy Awards.

There was a recent article in the Guardian as to why they feel it should win best picture (link below) and it's tough to argue subjective taste. If they feel the movie was wholly entertaining and significant in some manner then a case can be made for it.

I personally thought it was boring which to me nullifies the film from contention. Although I am not against a comedy or action film or even a horror film being up for best picture. Comedy always has trouble because comedy is highly subjective - Monty Python/Woody Allen etc.

So those usually split the votes enough to never have them win.

I watch all kinds of films - but Black Panther was no Deadpool 2 or Wonder Woman. And neither of these should be nominated. Though at least Celine Dion's "Ashes" fit the film perfectly and the music video was somewhat amusing that I was hoping it would get nominated for the song category.

 I'm a demonstrated poor judge of Academy sensibilities but I think best picture could go to either "Roma" due to its artsy and somewhat esoteric nature and general reviewer buzz OR "Vice" because its cleverly presented political agenda seems to align nicely with much of today's Hollywood and presumably, Academy members. Christian Bale's performance certainly doesn't hurt.

 To each his/her own, but that filmmaking seemed very disruptive to me...the camera angles were a distraction in this particular case...and that's coming from someone who loves Goddard and other "avant garde" filmmakers.

 I have seen them all except Vice and don't see perfection in any of them. The film Leave No Trace might have been my favorite.

 And it is deserving of something (or a couple of somethings), but certainly not Best Picture or Best Director.

 Not a requirement that others like it,...just happen to find it to be simultaneously glorious and repulsive film making.
I also like Ken Russell. He's not everyone's cup either.
Just my own $.02.

 I liked Vice a lot. I really appreciated the humor. But, expect more affirmative action. It's been Obamawood for years now. Trump backlash will rule the day.

 I watched both last night and I agree with you so far. Out of the six I've seen the Favourite and Green Book are my favourites.

Ideally I'd like to see a bit of a spread. The Favourite should take a female acting award of some such as the three actresses were excellent. Otherwise Best Picture. The two leads in Green Book were also excellent.

Rami was great in BR though. Lady Gaga was good too but she kind of plays herself. They may not vote for someone who hasn't paid her dues as an actress.

So it probably only gets best song.

Spike Lee best director? That film was quite good too. No one mentions it for much. Maybe screenplay.

Emma Stone was bloody excellent though. I'd choose her over Gaga.

 I liked the camera work as it seemed to me to fit the odd worl in which these upper crusts live.

The constant fighting for position in the hierarchy. It took about ten minutes for me to get immersed into the various angles and was good to go. Too bad the other fellow fell asleep since for me the last 10 minutes were the best 10 minutes in the film.

Of the 6 I've seen this is the one that sticks with me most. I generally like period piece movies like this but they usually never win. I hope it wins the actress categories.

 Out of the 5 others, I thought A Star is Born is not my cup of tea, although I know people who love it, and Black Panther is well made, but still comic book superheroes. Blackkklansman was surprisingly good, but not something I will rewatch.

For me it would be between the very different Roma and The Favourite. Roma hearkens back to classic film making, and very much Fellini or Bergman brought to Mexico. I liked pretty much everything about it, and wish I'd seen it on a big screen instead of a TV.

But if I had to choose, it'd be the Favourite. Audacious, hilariously over the top, from costumes to set design, to the deeply amoral goings on in the castle, this was a wild ride like no other movie I've seen before. I doubt it will win, but I'd be happy to see it do so.

 It will be interesting to see how the director's style holds up in subsequent films. (And don't worry, I'll rewatch the film and catch those last 10 minutes I slept through.)

 Green Book has a very good chance to win. Dream Works behind it. Black and White characters. Socio Political.

 My top 2 are The Favourite and Roma. Viktor will be happy. The two non Hollywood movies. Both 9/10
