Receiver or preamp advice (Audyssey)

 I could use some advice. I am looking for a home theater preamp or receiver that has both Audyssey XT32 and the ability to play music from a PC using Roon. Several Denon models have a USB input, but I cannot tell if these inputs do more than read a thumb/hard drive, or if they allow playback via a computer equipped with Roon or other music application. Thanks in advance.

 As I think about it, the PC I use also has an HDMI output. Perhaps that's a better way to connect it to a receiver (the Denon?) that accepts HDMI audio.

 Those Denon USB inputs do NOT play audio files from a computer, only from a flash drive. But those Denon units that can access your computer over your home network will play the files from your computer using either SMB of a DLNA server program. The interface is primitive, but it works and you don't have to pay Roon.

 Denon makes a good AVR. For music, Marantz is what you want. Just bought a Marantz sr8012 to replace a sr6007. Can't believe how much better my music files sound.

How different are the electronics in similarly priced Denon vs. Marantz models?

I have a Denon x4000 receiver. This model has been back twice for factory-warranted service, and its Denon predecessor had one trip for factory service. When this one dies, I'll be looking for another brand, but I hate to give up Audyssey XT32 (Denon and Marantz are the only receivers with this software). Marantz has that tiny, useless port window as a display.

 Have you looked at Onkyo? They have several receivers with the Audyssey XT-32 feature.

 What is your budget? Going the pre amp, amplifier route should always give better performance. But you pay for it. The other advantage, good amplifiers don't go out of style, pre amps can be replaced, or good ones can be upgraded with the latest technology.
