Because of the recent passing of the late great comedian Alan King,
I watched this last night. It stars King and Billy Crystal and both also produced the film, which was directed by Henry Winkler. Jo Beth Williams also has a prominent part as Crystals' pediatrician giel friend.Crystal plays a workaholic New York heart surgeon who hasn't taken a vacation in years. He himself suffers a heart attack during an operation he is performing and this leads to an epiphany and a desire to see and reconcile with his father (King) who is the top extra in Hollywood. King knows everyone in town (Sean Connery has a cameo) but has never had a speaking part. The father/son relationship is predictably cantankerous and bitter, but enlivened by snappy one liners and try and top this repartee'. Enjoyable and funny throughout with just the right touch of shmaltz at the end.
Follow Ups:
Rico,I was saddened by the news of King's death as well...always enjoyed his work.
I think I'll go with Just Tell Me What You Want, a King film with Ali McGraw, as my homage...not great, but AK does a nice job in an interesting non-comedic role.
All the best,
Gary
