Hi gang,
I've been wanting to get the DVD of this sci-fi classic. Most online listings have it as full screen or no screen size is mentioned.Anyone know?Thanks-Bob
Follow Ups:
...The movie was shot 1.37 aspect ratio (Motion Picture Academy standard), in 1951. If you follow the Wikipedia link (to a dry description of film aspects), you'll get a little information. The first chapter (1.1 "practical limitations) will spell it out. Hope this isn't too boring.
movie guide that all movies before the mid 50s were in 3/4 format. Does anyone know if this is true? I have never heard this before.
MGM and Fox had shortlived experiments with 70mm widescreen pictures around 1930. John Wayne's first starring picture, The Big Trail by Roaul Walsh was one of them.
Old style TVs got thier 4:3 ratio because it was the standard for movies early on. I dont know when movies started using a wider aspect ratio, but early ones were 4:3 (or, 1:33)
Supposedly "The Robe" from 1953 was the first film released in CinemaScope.
Wasn't this also Richard Burton's first big flick?
.
Clears things a bit, yeah.I did know that before a certain time in the 50s all movies were standard aspect ratio.Couldn't remember exactly when wid scren debuted.
I do know that the guy that ran Columbia pictures, which produced Earth Stood Stll, was a notorious tightwad.Harry Cohn, was it? Thought maybe that's why it's not in color, even if it give the film a film noirish look. You can see it was done cheaply.I keep laughing about the breathing/sight holes under Gort's chin.Guess nobody wanted to re-shoot so they'd stay within budget.
Wonderful film & what music!Wow!
Sorry, you're wrong. It's Twentieth Century Fox.
..........major brain fart I had there.thanks for the correction.
