This is Julian Schnabel's astonishing film about Jean-Dominique Bauby who at 42 had a stroke.
He was the editor of Elle in France.
He was left with only one eye and eyelid working.
Not only did he learn or adapt to communicate by the method of blinking when someone read out the right letter, but he wrote a book about it!
This film is about not only him but his family and the people in the hospital who looked after him and it is astonishing.
You could cry a hundred times.
Easily.
I do not want to give away the REAL moments of importance.
But if you do not see this film you WILL regret it.
I cannot remember sitting in a cinema that was as quiet as this.
It is simply astonishing.
How can an actor act when all he can move is one eye?
You will have to see the film to understand how good the performance is.
And the entire film is THAT good.
See it. It is the best film of the year.
Follow Ups:
so I gave up. "Gone to 44 yagger edge?" wtf?
I just saw this for second time in a theater and the subtitles were fine, idopmatic English.
This morning the film is still as good.
It's one of those you keep thinking about.
But I will concede La Vie En Rose may be in the running for film of the year.
not in absolute terms but because of the hatchet job on a wonderful singer, the ridiculous amount of hype (see the beautiful young actress make herself look terrible!), and its relentless negativeness and ugliness.
All one learned from the film about the lady was that she had serious substance problems.
Duh.

Complicit Constapo Talibangelical since MMIII
Everyone I know who saw it here thought it fantastic.
It was a big hit at the film festival last year.
I hate Charlize Theron-type moments. Beautiful actresses that play uglies: it's like DeNiro putting on 60-lbs. for a role. Who cares? It's the acting that matters and it was a one-note performance.
Second, a major flaw, was the one-sided characterization of a complex character, showing her to be nothing but a non-stop drug-taking-machine.
Lives seldom are this one-dimensional, even for the most serious drug abuser.
The film was almost nihilistic and had nary a surprise, a novel thought throughout its 2-hours.
or you simply reject things too quickly and then don't truly pay attention. It certainly wasn't my favorite movie for the year... probably not even top 5 but her portrayal was anything but one dimensional.
"You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when he hates all the same people you do."
As I Said, shame you couldn't get more from it.
it's a shame your standards are so low :-)
