What a mess this film is!
Keira Kneightley is not only anorexic, but play her part so badly.
It has long moment of nothing then a bit of quite good, too scarcely I am afraid.
The stupid scene of the three English soldiers lost in France is the summit of ridicule.
Then you have the typewriter sound underlying the music, how can someone make something so unnerving?
HOW?!
The only thing I like was the sound, the very naturl sound of the bee in the room. at the beginning...
The recording guy made a good job on that.
Avoid at all cost. ( I mean at the cost of KK beautiful ...ass....)
Follow Ups:
The film was such a fraud. It tried to be English doily-drama, a bit of David Lean, and every 'Why must they go to War' movie rolled into one choppy, silly script.
The big, 'French-evacuation' SteadiCam extravaganza not only was completely wasted in the film, but drove home what an ego-excercise the whole thing was (the director himself said he only staged that enormously complicated scene to impress people.)
Also, why the little girl in the lead had to walk like a windup toy, I still don't get, uptight upbringing on her character's part or not.
And that mess got nominated for an Oscar.....
Best,
CC.
Part the first: period country house costume drama
Part the second: expressionist fantasy on the BIG themes - blood, loss, war etc
Part the third: Maggie to camera verité
Part the fourth: see, Maggie told you they died - weren't you listening? In a flood in an underground station - cue washing machine effect. Hmm, let's think now. Oh yeah: also they woulda been so HAPPY, so let's show that, too.
What a mess.
Great break down; interesting.
Stylistic point of view variations, like a circling camera shot, may have helped me to not become disinterested.
...was nominated over "The Assasination of Jesse James".
The first hour was ok, but the last part was extremely unsatisfying.

Whoever dreamed up all that Oscar hype was tripping.....
I started watching this but after an hour just couldn't be bothered finishing it
KK is highly over-rated in my opinion and so far as looks are concerned there's more meat on a butcher's pencil.
Best Regards,
Chris redmond.
Well to be frank after one hour I quite too, BUT I had the next day a small part of it again for finally watching until the end the third day ( I BOUGHT that damned film )
Now, More meat on butcher´s´pencil, I like that...
Mes Amitiées,
P.
"....finally watching until the end the third day"
Patrick I salute you - I couldn't have managed that, and in fact I'd rather have a butcher stick a pencil in both my eyes, meat and all, than endure more than one twenty fourth of a day of that bloody film. :0)
Best Regards,
Chris redmond.
Damned I told you! I was so stupid because I paid for it to watch it until the bitter end.
I am getting old...
I would have given it a C+. But the Breck hairspray commercial ending (Irish Spring soap) was nauseating.
C+? You are very generous...
original and well done. So that boosted it up to a C+. Until it went to "Jazz Heaven" as Woody Allen would call it. The happy ending for audience members who just could not endure a sad ending.
Hum...Look it is also what I thought. That scene WAS original and I would have react the way you did, BUT after further reflexion I decide that this " confession " scene actually was in the novel, and not coming from the director, as no one making such a bad film can have such a good idea.
Now read the book and tell me if I am wrong....
had commercials featuring couples running along the beach hand in hand. Same with Irish Spring soap, lots of pictures of hand in hand couples running together through (supposedly) Ireland. That's what I was comparing the ending of Atonement to.
Well I don´t know those commercials...
But it is not flattering comparing a pictur to a commercial anyway....
couple running hand in hand happily on the beach when we know it never happened. Sickening! So whats up in Deutschland, btw? I just bought Andreas Vollenweider live from a little store in Düsseldorf.
Good old Germany?
Well in Germany today good new, the unemployed did get down to 8,4 % which is good new.
Vollenweider? Well that was I use to hear a long time ago!
It was quite relaxing, I must have a few vinyls somewhere.
