The traditional British drawing-room comedy reconditioned, and then deconstructed.
The opening proceeds slowly, properly -- except for a casket delivered to the funeral with the wrong body inside. That gaffe corrected, the family and mourners begin to arrive. Unfortunately one of them has been fed not a Valium for his nervousness, but what turns out to be LSD. When the drug hits, is when things begin to go wrong.
Hilariously wrong.
But after that, things go terribly wrong.
And never stop.
The whole British cast of characters and eccentrics is present, from the choleric, elderly Uncle Alfie through various high-society Dames and helpless men to even a Reverend Chasuble. But an American midget, played by the ever-wonderful and handsome Peter Dinklage, nearly steals the show. Except, that is, when Alan Turyck is on stage as an acid-besotted bystander.
And "on stage" it is, because here is a film that barely moves outdoors and plays all the better for its confinement.
The DVD, while in anamorphic widescreen, is somewhat soft in focus but one soon gets around that, as the tears in one's eyes will blur the picture anyway.

Follow Ups:
Everyone involved seemed to have a great time making it, although they often failed to get through a whole take without breaking up, which apparently happened quite often. Ironically, Macfadyen, the sad faced straight man, is most frequently the one who breaks up.
Absolutely great cast. I don't underdtand why Tudyck and Macfadyen aren't more famous.
Nice to have an adult comedy for a change that is actually FUNNY. This movie was one of my favorites last year and the absolute best time I had in a movie theater in 2007.
Great cast and for me, utterly boring.
Curious is it not?
" Mieux vaut une tête bien faite qu'une tête bien pleine."
I couldn't totally embrace the film.
That storyline being the LSD (or was it ecstasy) one. I mean, the idea of it wasn't fake but the performance of it was. I didn't get the sense that the actor truly knew what it was like to be on such substances and I never bought his performance/the direction.
"You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when he hates all the same people you do."
The mood swings from "everything's sooooo groooovey" to "uh-oh"?
And did you see him in the gag reel, the last scene?

and I never bought it.Heck... for all I know he's big into hallucenogins and nailed it perfectly for his own experience. Obviously it resonates with a lot of people but it didn't for me.
On a separate note... the little blackmailer guy was great!!... but then he always is.
"You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when he hates all the same people you do."
It was my first viewing of such a scene, which I might have thought was uncommon...
Dinklage is always great. Also not to forget Jordan Prentice as a racist dwarf actor in In Bruges.

I know I've told this story on one of these boards before...
We were editing a music video of his at work. It was while they were spraying so much Malathion in Los Angeles (1988-89 - ish). He and I were in the kitchen and started talking and I said something about the Malathion and about having just gotten inside the night before when the helicopters flew over unleashing their spray.
He said;
"Those helicopter's aren't what you have to worry about, it's the people with fish on their cars that you have to worry about."
"You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when he hates all the same people you do."
Not in the same league overall (and not the only example) but a movie with a spot on altered mind from hallucinogenic substances scene was the mushroom taking in "Knocked Up"
"You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when he hates all the same people you do."

I watched it twice, easily. The first time Sat night and the next time Sun morning. That speaks volumes IMO if you can not only sit through a movie twice but truly enjoy it both times.
FWIW Alan Tudyk just got to the movie site minutes before they shot the scene where he thinks the casket has a live person in it and the hilarity that ensures. Funny how movies are made...
thanks

It is a rare experience to be in a movie theater where people are almost literally rolling in the aisles with laughter. This happened when I saw it, and when I recommended it to a friend, he had the same experience. It was maybe the most fun movie experience ever for me.
Went the first time and laughed so hard I cried - the audience was screaming with laughter.
Took friends to see it seeral weeks later, same reaction. I think seeinf this with other people was a treat. I laugh just as hard watching the DVD.
Mcafadyen just has to look at Dinklage and stutter "Exactly how did you know my dad?" and I'm gone.
I enjoyed this one very much.
