or have there been no really decent movies over the last several months? I used to hit a movie by myself about once a week, and one with my wife about every other. Only movie I've seen in 3 months was Ironman, which I liked, but that was really because my son wanted to see it. I realize that it's summer and the younger crowd is the target, but I am sick of looking at what's available from the many theatres in our area and ending up going to none of them.
Follow Ups:
The Visitor and a couple of decent docs (Bigger, Stronger, Faster comes to mind).
None are classics but, IMO, they're all pretty good.
"You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when he hates all the same people you do."
I would agree, I can't find much at the local cinema worth seeing.
The entire movie "climate" has changed dramatically over the past three decades or so. As a baby boomer, our tastes are out of style.
Summer is dominated by two critters: 1) animation/CGI and 2) block busters. I simply don't care for animation (though I enjoyed the first Toy Story and the first Shrek). The block busters approach is wearing thin. Indiana Jones was weak, The Incredible Hulk was weak, etc.
Have you seen the previews for "Journey to the Center of the Earth," w/ Brendon Frasier? The original is an absolute classic, but this remake looks horrible. WAY TOOOOOO MUCH computer graphics. Everything looks phony. But hey, our kids were raised on computer games, so it will probably do well. I actually like to see real grass and trees instead.
We usually have to wait until the late fall--closer to Oscar season--to find any thing that resembles adult fare.
There is an incredible lack of creativity and imagination in movies today. IMO, there are too many sequels, too many sketches expanded to feature-length comedies (think most SNL stuff), too many super hero movies (Hulk tanked the first time around, why bring back that POS?).
Just my thoughts. YMMV tremendously.
Every summer the big blockbusters come out and they get put into multiple theaters in the multiplexes so that start times can be every hour. Result is fewer movies playing. And then, these summer movies are traditionally loud and mindless. Not that I am totally against summer type movies, they can be well done. But although I saw Ironman and enjoyed it for what it is, I just cannot bring myself to see another Hulk. Get Smart looked like it would be good, but now the reviews are mixed to negative. The more adult fare is not at any local convenient multiplex this time of year.
Nevertheless, I saw Redbelt a few weeks ago and the Norwegian Reprise yesterday. So at the margins, there are those movies that are not comic book adaptations.
It's just you!
I know release dates are different around the world, but I can manage at least a film a week if I have the time to get to them.
In a month it's BIFF, the Brisbane International Film Festival and I will be awash with them.
That last time I was there. I said there was nothing on, then they rattled of all the summer dreck I'm not interested in.
I maintain there hasn't been a decent run of movies in 18 months. They should have cancelled the Oscars last year.
;O)
Watchutawkinbout?
Tol'able David came out in 1921. He is implying you are out of touch with current movies.
