You hear someone SO MUCH you almost think you know the person, then they're not around anymore and it's like losing a friend. I was really bothered too when Mel Blanc died. He made his way into my home for many years as I was growing up and I couldn't imagine him NOT being around. And what a great job to have, doing voice overs, especially to the extent where YOU are the standard. Don even said in an interview he was 'the luckiest man on earth'.
Follow Ups:
Thought DLF really seemed to dominate the feature trailer business, there are a lot of guys-including Miguel Ferrer-who will pick up the slack (obviously). Quite honestly, I wear earplugs while the trailers are playing. Movie studio trailers are generally earsplittingly loud , and they all have the same poorly written, derivative narrations. No disrespect meant to his memory. I worked in a studio trailer department for 5 years, and find narration to be the least interesting aspect of the process.
it's a necessary component when displaying upcoming attractions for potential viewers. Imagine watching a trailer WITHOUT it(that can work for horror movies though). He was just part of that process and was good at it. I guess i'm just envious of people who can do voice and narration work, sounds like a fun career. Stacy Keach does some good work and another favorite of mine is the late James Coburn. Miguel is great too, but for me he's always the punchy and colorful Bob Morton :-)
Don on Don.
I thought there were a hundred people that could replace Johnny on the Tonight Show. Hell, I thought I could do a better job.But then the years went by and nobody even came close. I stopped watching.
There's a bunch of old guys I grew up watching. George Burns, Bob Hope, and a hundred more. And most are gone now.
It gets worse as you get older. The older you get, the less you recognise
the world around you. Nor do you especially want to. I have no interest in hip hop, crass comedians, lousy talk show hosts, reality shows, or 6th rate dramas.
