The new HTWWW DVD came out today, remastered from original Cinerama 3 panel source, I got it at Best Buy this morning for $31 in a special box set with lobby cards, souvenier book and all that stuff.
Picture is very good and evidently the panel splices have been digitally removed, they are much less obvious than they were in the theater. The box says the video has a 2.89:1 aspect ratio.
The sound is DD and improved over the old DVD, better clarity and impact.![]()
Follow Ups:
This was the first movie I saw in Cinerama, and I was over 500 miles from my rural ND home in Minneapolis, and the lines between the three projected images are part of the total experience for me when projected on my 100-inch front screen to recreate the night. More than an issue of what is the best picture, when I see those lines, memories of my younger days come pouring back. I'm just afraid a version w/o the lines would lose something for me, and I was glad the original DVD transfer kept them.
I will leave the DVDs w/o the lines to those here who never saw the real thing that night in Minneapolis.
...I even have the roadshow program somewhere.
But I watched it last night on cable. I think it might take some getting used to but I'll be fine without lines.
Any problem I have with the movie - which I enjoyed last night - don't have anything to do with the presesntation.
I remember I saw the movie in theatres about 5 or 6 times when it came
out originally, but never have seen it since. I just might have to
rent this version and watch it!

Tom,
Now THAT's what widescreen is all about...heck of a vista. I am glad to see they didn't chicken out and chop the sides in the interest of those who scream bloody murder because something is wider than their 1:1.78 displays.
Now I have to check and see if it is out (or coming) in Blu-Ray. My 58 Panny is waiting to be fed.....
CC.
Yeah CC, it's in Blu-Ray too, I saw the BR disc today at Best Buy. If they keep coming out with movies like this in BR I'll get a player.
-------------Call it, friendo.
I don't have a Blu-Ray machine. Simple answer, eh?I can decide for myself when I'm wasting my money.
I got one. And most film are really now sharper than ever.
Buy one, as films are flowing in.
