So I pick this picture to have a little reminder of the actor he was.
And it comfort my opinion, he was not a great actor, a studio actor yes, a good looking man, but really more to be holding the second role than the first one.
BTW the film was for an Hitch, not good at all, total lack of humor, that hurts.
Good scenes but too rare, too rare.

Follow Ups:
characteristic which pretty much all America men wished: coolness.
But, he also could be quite a bit more as can be seen in "Hombre," or in the two Tennessee Williams' films, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," and, "The Long Hot Summer."
I'd say Steve McQueen was more what you're describing, never being able to portray much else but a cool taciturn hipness.

Watchable, but "just" barely. Notable for the scene in the farmhouse which illustrates how difficult it is to actually dispatch someone who does not want to go.
Not a great role for Newman IMO.
To judge his abilities and assets, I would choose Hud, The Hustler, Mr. & Mrs. Bridge, Nobody's Fool and/or Road To Perdition. More then just a pretty face IMO.
Torn Curtain is pretty tepid stuff. I even thought so when I saw it in theater when it was releases. I was a kid, went with my parents. I culdn't detect much chemistry between Andrews and Newman, then or now.
Yes.
Mr. Bridge was of what I seen his best role.
Nobody´s Fool was a nice picture, he had a second role in it, was it not?
Yes.
Hitch who was to sexually very...attracted must has been very unhappy with both of them...
But Hitch did always the same and the same film over and over again, and the roles also, just different lightning.
Shades off..

... the realisation of the barely-sublimated sexuality of her Sound of Music role. (My hormones were raging around then, okay?!)
Newman was at his actorly best, I think, in The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In much else, like Clooney now, he was hired for his prettiness and had little chance to show off his gift.
Ok....For you, but not for me, when I think of her, more like a mother.... In Victor/ Victoria she was fine.

she could have done with a makeover
