..a TV show - Dexter.
It's not as lofty as Deadwood or The Sopranos but it's high in that tier of smart adult TV shows.
It has a novel premise, great writing, fine ensemble acting and a vital, complex leading character who is strong enough to hold everything together and propel it forward.
Highly recommended if you like tales of crime, the macabre and a twisted sense of humor in an exotic urban background. Great snatches of Latin bump music, too
Follow Ups:
Gentle beautifully acted film. People at their best. Rare.
my initial impression was not good. I found the frequent discussion going on in Dexter's head while the camera was on his face a bit much.
to the show's basic identity and does not go away.
I've been watching 3-4 episodes back to back and have found some little quibblebits with the show but then somehow it rises to overcome. It maintains its intelligence but throws us an occasional bone of the obvious so we don't feel too left out.
I like the things I've mentioned before and I also like it's strong, almost overt reference to the characteristics in the cheap old-time Saturday movie serials.
All these shows - Dexter, The Shield, The Wire, Sopranos, et al - are, after all, just smart soap operas.
There's some damn fine acting going on, too - the lead, his sister........some are bit over the top but that's part of the fun.
I'm about to watch the final disc and will decide if I will move to season two. Either way, I have no regrets about the time I've spent.
Some of the best stuff I've seen in the last few years has been on television. There almost isn't a reason to go out to movies. Dexter is terrific as was Rome and Deadwood. I am also enjoying True Blood and Fringe this year. This Thursday starts Life on Mars which has been getting good press. Starting from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and moving forward, there seems to be at least 2 or 3 great series every year.
Some of the best going on the last couple of years. A great series with the most unlikely likeable hero on TV *
* other than The Shield's Vic Mackey of course

So sayeth Charles Barkley
Just bought season 1 on dvd but I have yet to watch the first episode because I can't stop watching Weeds. Some of these pay channel shows are the best shows ever made IMO. Loved Deadwood, Rome, The Sopranos, Entourage, Big Love and many of the mini series. God I watch too much tv.
