I know it's not playing in many places, but has anybody seen it yet? What were your thoughts? Did it open your eyes, or did you think it was crap?
Follow Ups:
I found it very worthwhile. First of all, the movie is mainly directed at atheists and agnostics. There very point of the movie is that religious people can't be reasoned with and reject logic which is demonstrated over and over again. It is more of a call to agnostics and atheists to speak up and to stop coddling the religious agenda. Bill Maher walks into various religious strongholds (be they the Vatican, a museum for creationism or a truckstop church) and asks questions which are logical but that religious people cannot answer. From a book I love, people question everything except what they believe in. I learned just a bit about some facts, scripture matters and previous deities whose background stories are a bit too familiar.
Will religious people like this movie? Absolutely not. Will agnostics and atheists like this movie? Probably yes and may feel energized and upset that (for Americans, at least) our politics are completely injected with superstitious nonsense.
Roger Ebert is a strong catholic and liked the film quite a lot.
I can't see Religulous where I am located but "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins should convert those who border the religions or who are self described agnostics to become full out Atheists. Coddling religion is like coddling an arsonist. they may not always start the fire but if there is a fire they'll throw a big pile of gas on it.
The argument is that there are good people who do good things, bad people who do bad things - but for otherwise good people to evil things - that takes religion.
Dawkins is less antagonistic than Maher (and less funny) but he does have science to back up what he says - and notes that evolution is a "fact" not a theory. Darwins "theory of evolution by natural selection" is a "theory" (which is as provable to the same degree as the "theory of gravity" but evolution itself is without doubt a fact. The alternative creationism beliefs have zero evidence, and even less logic. But who needs facts and logic when you have faith. Some pedophile telling you there is a God when you are three and parents pounding that drivel into your head for 20 years and other flock members telling you the same and some money stealing liar on TV and radio belting it into their heads for decades. It's awfully difficult to fight prolonged systemic brainwashing of that degree. The German youth joined the Nazi Youth party in droves hating Jews for zero reason except for what government and parents told them. These people are in many ways blameless. Luckily there are a few who do eventually escape the brainwashing.
Nowadays we've got this ilk who feels his self-importance more deeply than anything else he's able to feel. Ultimately he's an empty shell/shill.
His most consistent message: Look at me. He's almost as hard to watch as Palin. A squirm talking.
...since the mid-1960s.
I'd say his successor is probably Jon Stewart.
...I knew Mort Sahl, sir, and Jon Stewart ain't no Mort Sahl.
I saw clips of him acting in a sit-com before the current show began.
As the guy who jumped off the 20-story building shouted as he passed the 10th Floor "So far..so good!"
Believe me, I am no "Fan" of Bill Mahr, but I found the documentary even handed. He asked a lot of questions to various clergy and let them bury themselves.
Never forget, more wars have been fought in the name of religion than not.
"Never forget, more wars have been fought in the name of religion than not."
People bandy this statement about but it's simply not true. Most wars are fought over land and plunder. Start running down the list of wars and you'll find not that many were fought over religion.
"...more wars are fought IN THE NAME of religion..."
let me translate that for you
religion is used to facilitate and lubricate waragree that religion is a stupid reason for war
right and properly -- war is always about land and booty
the only function of religion is manipulating the ignorant masses
to a large extent, television has taken the traditional role of religion -- we believe in WMD because we saw people say it on TV -- just as effective as walking on water or rising from the dead -- television is a miracle more miraculous than anything religion ever made up.
"Religion is the opiate of the masses" ever heard that one ???
Everyone is watching war on tv -- that makes it unreal -- same function as religion and dope.
here's a statistic for you: In the US armed forces -- all the Navy Seals and Special Forces teams = 99% of these expert killers call themselves Evangelical Christian
the word : "Assassin" is derived from "hashish"... suicidal killers in old Arabia took hash (and likely opium) to catch a glimpse of Paradise -- a place they were sure to enter if they were killed in the process of killing (for Islam or their Master -- same thing)
the US special forces do exactly the same thing -- being Evangelical Christians -- they don't mind putting their lives in extreme danger -- "believing" they will go to Heaven.
morons
you gotta be nuts, or religious (same thing) to do what they do

but usually there is an underlying religion involved. Acquiring land is an aspect so too is power hungry megalomaniacs but Palestine/Israel is and the entire middle east conflict against Jews is religion based almost entirely.
George Bush attacked Iraq -- a country that had ZERO to do with 9/11 because he said GOD told him too. Lot of dead Iraqis and American soldiers are now dead because of Religion based running of countries.
Hitler - well if we take his mein Kempf book in his own words he acted from a twisted sense of faith based Catholicism - despite religions claim that he was not faith based the evidence clearly states otherwise.
Stalin was an Atheist but the difference is he did not "act" in the name of Atheism - a neat point that is missed by right wing fanatics.
Religions based on the sky god ideology are dangerous. People willing to believe in such things are dangerous to themselves and to others because as Richard Dawkins noted in the Root of All Evil - there are good people and bad people in this world regardless of religion or not having religion but to have otherwise good people DO evil things - that takes Religion.
Bill Maher may be sarcastic and sometimes mean - but Bill O'Reilly is a complete and utter whackjob nut who is mean, angry, intolerant, and almost always Wrong about everything. Number one best seller so he has a big nut-job following of "believers.
I spent a day watching Fox News, the first time I have seen this channel, and now I get the jokes. This is supposedly a serious TV news station - Truly shocking at the complete low quality journalism (I mean these people are truly stupid). But I hear it's popular. According to them Palin easily won the VP debate which I had watched.
Won the debate? 86% of their nutty followers agree. Thankfully 14% of the right wing redeemed themselves by revealing they have an IQ higher than 50. Then again they may have pushed the wrong button on the poll.
(nt)
And the killing goes on. The only thing that has changed is the efficiency at which it is carried out.
he asked a lot of questions but they were largely rhetorical in nature. He also spent a lot of time just saying "that's nuts." I did think there were some very funny moments due to some clever editing. But this piece totally lacks meat and Bill Mahr makes the mistake of attributing ceetitude with religion. The same levels of certitude can be found in some atheists as well. Just look at Communist China and the former Soviet Union. I think he starts out with a very good question, why do people believe irrational things (religion). Why is faith a legitimate reason for belief and why is it a good thing. But he really does drop the ball right after the great premise. But I did have some good laughs. Mormons and Evangelicals speaking in tongues make for easy targets.
It had some good laughs but it's fluff.
