Night of the Hunter - an earlier version?

Okay, once a long time ago I saw on TV a movie whose plot was simlar to Night of the Hunter. There was a haunting song played while some children floated down a river at night with a crazy preacher after them riding on horseback on the river bank. I hadn't seen Night until recently and figured it was that movie, but it wasn't I'm positive. Mitchum wasn't in it and it seems to have been made in the early 1940s, not in the mid-fifties. Anybody have any idea what that other movie was? Could it have been an earlier version of the same story under a different title? I don't remember any of the plot details or if it was the same as the later movie.

The film was based on the novel of the same name, and the novel was based on the true story of Harry Powers of West Virginia. He was hanged in 1932. I don't find info on an earlier version, but that doesn't mean it can't exist.

  Thanks for that info. Since the plot was from a book published in the early 30s, I think it likely it was an earlier version of Night of the Hunter. The similarities couldn't be coincidence, I wouldn't think. There are a lot of B movies of that era that are now totally forgotten, but it did make it to TV at some point. At the time, I hadn't even heard of the later Night of the Hunter. This other version, I'd guess, was made around 1940. It made an impression on me. It had some fascinating scenes.
  I see now the book wasn't published until the 1950s. I am baffled.
