I've never seen it.The only thing I know of ZP is the soundtrack.I bought the MGM lp many years ago & only because of the 3 Pink Floyd tracks on it.
Rhino released it on double cd,the original with extra "unnreleased" tracks. In fact there is a b**tleg circulating about,2 cds worth & all Floyd material.
The director originally wanted a PF only soundtrack but changed his mind.
That's how Kaliedoscope,John Fahey & the Grateful Dead ended up on it.A late friend of mine of mine saw ZP when it came out-said it stunk.
Guess I'll have to see for myself.
the opening sequence is shot entirely with very long lenses that gives a compressed aura to movement like in a vacumn. The film is about a vacuous society without a moral code. Ray Hughes
“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.” Hunter S. Thompson, A GENERATION OF SWINE
Many years ago I read a long article about the making of this film. It was about as good a study of inflated egos and international misunderstandings as I've ever read.
Personally I like "ZP." I don't think it's a masterpiece BUT it is a milestone film in the history of late 60s cinema, if only for the lessons it presents on how not to go about making a movie. I've seen it twice - once when it was first released and again, some years later, in a college film arts class. My classmates were about evenly divided between those who thought it trash and those who liked it. I don't think any there thought it a masterpiece.
I won't buy it but will likely rent it to watch on a stormy night.
I feel much like you do on this one. I think it has some great elements (such as the ending sequence), but as a whole it is a mess of a film. Definitely worth seeing once, though, IMHO.
