I got around to watching this yesterday. What a wonderful performance by Rourke! He really brought out the humanity in the character. As much as I like Penn in Milk I think this was a stronger performance. Marisa Tomei was also excellent.

Follow Ups:
I agree with Wendall. I coulda played Milk (of course, I'm kidding) but I couldn't have played the Ram. I read a couple of posts from guys who didn't care for this. "They got it" but didn't like it. Don't think it's the broad strokes that make this a fine piece of work. Think it's the small strokes. It's in the nuance. Rourke's performance had that like nobody's business.
...after earning the other day that the studio's choice of lead was Nicholas Cage.
Good job the director dug his heels in methinks!
Best Regards,

Not up there with the Wrestler, but pretty good Elmore Leonard and very good Rourke showing intensity & restraint.

...the movie is wonderful, a fine character study. Even though I never watch wrestling or have the slightest interest in it, the characters, relationships and performances are so true and finely wrought you won't mind the wrestling bits at all - in fact, you may come away with some insights you never expected to attain.
and mutual respect among the wrestlers. Marisa was as good as ever.

...Mickey was playing himself.
Penn became Milk.
I never thought of Rourke as poignant so I would have to disagree.
I was reminded of what I liked about Rourke from his early career (especially "Diner' and 'Body Heat"); that he played a vulnerable, flawed misfit. His character was the same, but with the wreckage of many years of self destructive behavior under his belt. His performance actually reminded me of Karloff's monster; low key, naturalistic, and and so sincere as to become almost unbelievable.
I agree Mickey was spot on but it was bleak indeed. Two of my favorite actresses, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood made it even better.
thanks
