Most here have seen this Japanese horror story. A story that doesn't turn to horror until the last thirty minutes. The first hour shows a single dad raising his teenage son and succumbing to loneliness to the point of participating in a movie industry buddy's scheme of bringing in young women for phony auditions.
What seems harmless, at first, is the attraction he feels for a rather quiet, pretty young woman whose past seems entirely fabricated. Even though others express catching a different vibe he ignores it.
In the last thirty minutes we find out exactly how out-of-balance this demure beauty is....and it is painfully horrific. What is so unusual about this particular Miike film is that you wait so very long for the ugly stuff to start. Of course, he was following the script based on the book.
Miike fans will have already seen this one as it was released in 2000. If you haven't, it's worth see.
NO GRITS NO GLORY

I keep thinking of the scene where she is sitting near the phone with her head down and when it rings her head snaps upright and the camera pans back to show the burlap bag move etc...
darn, before that she was so nice!
thanks

his other best film. I like a lot of his other stuff, too, but it's just good modern noir: those two are superb.
nope, nuttin' here
