Just saw it tonight. One of the best movies I've seen. Great effects, but they were gritty, more realistic. Amazing story, different. This wasn't one I could call after two minutes. Totally different from Lord of the Rings, but Peter Jackson did only produce it. Each time I lose faith in Hollywood that they have nothing new and only crap to sooth the ignorant, I, on occasion, am pleasantly surprised. My highest recommendation.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
Follow Ups:
I wish I had waited for it to be released as a rental. I have no desire to see it again. I rate it a 2 out of 5.

which is still one of my favorite movies. Same basic conceit, visitors from another world subjected to a very human welcome.
There was no attempt at subtlety. The South African setting was clearly intended to invoke race problems in their recent history.
The story arc was quite conventional, but it left me satisfied. It was not possible for me to predict where this was headed, and that is somewhat notable in itself. It was, all in all, a fine time at the movies.
to a gritty subject matter that is hard to stomach (literaly). Without giving it away, the movie is unsavory to begin with but when the action started I did not care and enjoyed the unique story and effects.
It has (many) flaws but I do not care, it is more action film than serious effort.
A pretty good ride similar to Cloverfield but more intense and gritty...
thanks

I'll prolly go back for seconds next weekend.
First of all, it was twenty minutes (guessing here, it seemed an hour, really) of talky, talky and documentary-like story telling. You know the script is shot when it takes this long to get rolling. Second, the central character--- actually, the only one "fleshed out" at all, isn't much of an action guy. He was so nerdy at the beginning I didn't see that transformation as believable.
A film like this needs a true villain: bad guys are as important as heroes in good films. What do we get? Nothin.' The guy's f-in-law and a bald-headed guy runnin' around the ghetto who should have been greased FIRST during the denouement.
The worst mistake--- and a really unforgivable one--- was having all this para-military action in a ghetto housing 1 and 1/2 million yet.... we only see a few bugs. Maybe they were scared of Raid?
But you've seen all of this before, of course, and better done.
The huge hovering mother ship. The Jar Jar Binks "prawns." "The Fly" where man becomes a creature. The "Robocop" super-mechanized attacker.
This film should be adored by gamers. The Fx weren't very good, actually. The movements of the prawns were herky-jerky and I was unable to suspend any disbelief.
Finally, Jackson placed the film in South Africa. The alien camp bore unmistakable resemblance to the huge ghettos where decades of apartheid placed blacks. To have the only main black character be a savage criminal who delights in voodoo and the eating of his enemies' body parts smacks of racism.
If you want to see a good alien film--- actually, a great one--- rent "The Hidden."

that wasn't the least bit funny. Then, it turns into a limping metaphor for all the racial injustice of the world (being set in SA) and finally the expression of human-alien brotherhood against such injustice.
Ridiculous. Any country would have annihilated the bugs long ago.

The beginning, with it's mockumentary style of story telling nearly propelled me out of my seat. The whole story seemed silly and predictable. I wish I had my time and money back. We somehow saw two different movies.
NO GRITS NO GLORY
Great set up. Great premise. Nice special effects. Documentary style detracts from the movie and is inconsistent. Plot line and characters pretty cliche. Nothing great in the acting department.
