Haven't a clue why, but a few minutes ago I was trying to think of the name of the US soldier who starred in the film of his own story and who also went on to star in many more films.
Searched for Audley, Audtrey then almost by chance found the guy, and after reading his bio was amazed at how his life seemed to be the perfect battle against the odds, never give up, 'yes we can' story that Hollywood couldn't have written without being ridiculed for being unrealistic and over the top.
Seems like it could inspire a new generation if redone well.

Follow Ups:
I loved the original, and have wondered why there's never been an attempt at a new version. Thinking that hellish battle footage could almost put the audience in York's boots, and a the prospect of a realistic portrayal of the personal York backstory in a modern, non-Hollywood fashion makes me drool. Hope it happens, someday.
shooting animals. Wow! I'd love to see a guy treating humans just like hunted animals!
Is it the glorification of killing or the deep patriotic rush you get that has you slathering?
Nobody could compare anymore today on our political correctness agenda.
It was a John Ford film, I think.
Much too long but with a lot of charm.
Who would want a remake?
Maybe with Audie Murphy?
It was a Howard Hawks picture, not a Ford.
Oh Thanks.

NO GRITS NO GLORY
His excellent book "Clear the Bridge" always comes to mind when having a bad day at work, really puts things in perspective for me.
Looking at his wikipedia entry I see "a film is in the works" I can hardly wait.
Cheers

straightforward story with none of the plot twists expected in films today. "True" war films usually fail this one being the ringing exception.

Writers and directors are too often obsessed with license and irreverence. I shudder to think what a remake of "Young Mr. Lincoln" by a Stone would look like.
