James Caan and Robert Duvall (and with very good support from Bo Hopkins, Burt Young, Gig Young, and Mako).
Not particularly well done but the obviously ad-libbed chatter from Caan and Duvall in the early scenes almost elevate it. The only reason I'm mentioning it is as a comparison to what passes for action films today: this one, a secondary Sam effort, still is light-years above most other directors' efforts.
Caan and Duvall portray two mercenaries that operate in the darkest of CIA ops until, during one job, an assassination blows up the job. Caan, horribly injured, is cast away by his employers but swears to himself not to rest until he can wreak revenge and assume his former position.
It held my attention, more than I can say for 90% of the over-directed, over-scored, and over-killing-filled stuff these days. Perhaps it has something to do with the quality of the acting and the never insulting direction?
