Here in the US last evening, TCM showed "The Tingler". It wasn't bad for what it was. Before the doctor isolates the monster in the body of the deaf-mute woman, there is a scene in which he tries to provoke it in himself through the self-administration of what his assistant calls an "acid". In fact, the same character differentiates it from a drug. The doctor experiences terrible paranoia and hallucinations from his overdose. Is he experimenting with LSD?
And, yes, those very unexpected color sequences were shocking.

Karl

Follow Ups:
I remember the tingler. It was hyped for months ahead of time to be shown on TV. All of us neighborhood kids got together to watch it, this was in south San Jose, CA. About halfway through the movie, just when one of the scary parts was starting, United Technologies )(Rocket Engine Builders) set off a test of some hugh rocket motor, roaring and shaking! Scared the s**t out of us, two went home running!

Theaters rigged buzzers under several seats to be set off at scary points to scare the piss out of a few lucky ones in the audience. IIRC, they also advertised medical personnel standing by at all showings.
