and NOT from the fact that they're (by most definitions) terrible!Having just typed that, I find my favorite
"Halloween" movies are probably "Nightmare Before Christmas" and
"Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein".Neither terror filled, but some fun thrills.
Alien is still an effective "Haunted House"
film, but not...Halloweeny... "Psycho" works,
not Halloweeny though...Your favorite Halloween movie?

Deborah Kerr.
Scary, artistically superior film.
..and it was the most frightening movie that I've ever seen. I wasn't settled down until hours later. Honestly, it was more effective than The Exorcist, which WAS my go-to scary film. Deliverance also works, but on a different level for me.
Baba-Booey to you all!
...dread. Hah! Not with blood. A litle sanguinity goes a long way for me. I don't find gore very appealing.
I don't think of myself as a horror movie fan, but if you look at the list below you'll see that's not quite true - in fact, I'm a big fan of *good* scary movies, especially ghost stories. I simply prefer my creepy flicks a bit more elegant and restrained than say...Halloween or Saw 2.
BTW: Please don't let the fact that many of these movies are available through The Criterion Collection put you off! I'm also quite happy to add a new movie to my fave list this year: Let The Right One In. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it (and I know many of you already have.)
In no particular order:
Bride Of Frankenstein
The Old Dark House
The Devil's Backbone
Eyes Without A Face
The Haunting
The Legend of Hell House
Vampyr
The Innocents
Rosemary's Baby
Freaks
Onibaba
Kwaidan
Haxan
The Wicker Man
Hour Of The Wolf
The Man Who Laughs
Cat People
Don't Look Now
Nosferatu
Woman In The Dunes
"Cabinet of Dr. Caligari?"
I'm horrified!
Is damn scary isn't it?
good pick and one of my favorite movies ever.
It's like the movie that all the Twilight Zone episodes were modeled after...
thanks
Phil
Dead Ringers
Flesh for FrankensteinThe thing that's most creepy to me about Haxan is AFAIK it's true.
Not much into the horror myself, though seem to have an awful lot of them...
Couple I see more in the humerous/thriller category are Peter Jackson's Dead Alive and The Frighteners...not too scary for me, just entertaining weirdness...I get more creeped out by Jeepers Creepers and The Devils's Rejects, say, about my limit...

Which we saw the other night was very impressive -
Nice tempo, a certain timeless quality and a moving
tale of friendship/love. Great swimming pool scene too!
A thinking person's vampire film.
I will be on the lookout for:
The Old Dark House
The Devil's Backbone
Eyes Without A Face
The Innocents
Onibaba
Kwaidan
Haxan
Hour Of The Wolf
The Man Who Laughs
Woman In The Dunes
Thanks!

The Haunting will run be the one I watch this Halloween. Black and white and still heads above anything else IMHO!
;^)
One of the best ever.
Just watched that again recently, holds up well and still scary. Very effective sound effects!

It's not exactly a monster movie, but it's the eeriest one I know, from the music to the photography. The 4 lead actors are perfect. I never tire of this one.

The Blob, The Thing, Man With The X-Ray Eyes...Forbidden Planet terrified me. I was a highly suggestible small child.
Suddenly - at about 10 - I got desensitized and was able to finally enjoy scary flickers.
This is a pretty scary film that I suspect not too many people have seen.
Rod
Old school. Good choice.
Jack
Juon: The Grudge-The original Japanese theatrical release
Uzumaki- Not scary as much as just so freaking bizarre.
Legend Of Hell House- My favorite haunted house movie.
Jack
on the first viewing was a bit scary
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (at the theater) was almost too much
of course Alien was a little creepy
thanks

...when I participated in it as a kid. I like old fashion ghost stories, and atmospheric, moody films, so the older titles are the ones I favor. The Abbott & Costello was terrific fun. My other faves include:
Dead of Night (1945) used to give me chills.
The Mummy (1933). The Karloff close ups are breathtaking.
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935).
The Black Cat (1934) and The Raven (1935) are Legosi-Karloff brawls to the death. The later Invisible Ray is a good one, but inferior to the first 2 titles.
compared to recent Slash/Saw/Bloodbucket trends, but that's as classic a
list as possible and I doubt that will ever change.
Elsa Lanchester was truly manic in BOF.

the roaches and bugs coming out of those masks.
Wait Until Dark. When I first saw it, it scared me worse than
anything in my life up until that time. It still does - almost.
Alien is still effective, as is John Carpenter's The Thing.

there was a short film with Karen Black where a voodoo doll came to life and was trying to kill her... that was a good one too.
"The man is only half himself, the other half is his expression." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
I don't even remember the other two stories, only the voodoo doll.
...in about 1970, a small group of us first saw the original "Night of the Living Dead" at a midnight show on Halloween.
Pretty scary...
the parking lot, zombie-like. It caused a commotion!
Do you know that one?

So..What?
