The full set just arrived. I'm in for the long haul. All 26 flicks starring Shintaro Katsu, starting with the first in black and white, filmed in 1962. Color was used starting with the 3rd film in 1963. The 25th was filmed in 1973. The 26th and last featuring Katsu, was made 16 years later in 1989. Katsu died in 1997.
A poor Japanese master swordsman walking the countryside, blind as a bat, but supersensory, could disembowel a legion of bad guys or entire troops of samurai if needed to defend the weak and helpless.
The subtitles are easy to keep up with.
This movie series was so popular that it spun off a television series in the mid-70's, along with many other movies using a similar theme. The last reference I could find was a 2008 movie titled Ichi, which was based on Zatoichi's (Ichi's) daughter.
I'll be needing a lot of popcorn.

Might be a good tool for interrogations. By the third or fourth film the suspect will be singing like a canary :-)

If I start singing after a couple of these dvd's, there will be dogs running for cover. Won't be no canaries here.

Dazzling cast of charactors, a bit crazy at times which makes it a lot of fun.

I checked out the movie stats. Appears to be a rivival/remake/tribute to the original series. Not sure, but I'll add that one to the stack after I wade through these first 26.
Shouldn't take more than 6 months or so.
Even though he is know as a comedian, he can villainize with the best of them.
Share a bowl of grits with someone you love tonight.
I bought that one just for that....what a weird concept to have that at the end...delightful.
