Denis is most definitely one of the best modern directors, and she drives that message hard with 35 Shots, which builds upon her other masterworks (Friday Night jumps to mind most immediately) and provides an even deeper and more poignant psychological study.
She dispenses with most external elements, leaving just enough to place her heroes in time and location - concentrating instead on what is truly important - their inner worlds.
The film is insightful, melancholic, and very serious at the same time. Done in the best tradition of the finest European cinema, something that is largely gone today.
Highly recommended.

with beautiful cinematography and music. It is amazing how many great films there are if you can find them.
I also like the full screen mode it uses. It is easier to watch and enjoy. I see no need for widescreen unless it is Ben Hur or Kurosawa or some other grand event...

"Beau Travail?" I think it's her best. "I Can't Sleep" is disturbing and a gut-shot to bourgeois society. Of course, "Chocolat" brought her fame in her first film; I need to revisit.
Which brings me to, "The Intruder." Worth it just for the actor portraying the older guy with a serious health problem. This film is VERY ambitious, perhaps too much so, and it jumps all over the map literally and plot-wise. Still, you're captivated by the story and the intelligence and skill of the film maker.
Among her other works I particularly loved the Friday Night.
