Last night we watched "Floating Weeds". This was one stunning film, and visually almost beyond belief in it's beauty at times. A year or two ago we watched "Tokyo Story", which I really liked, but it didn't leave me quite as impressed.
I believe that our video store has at least one more Ozu film, and if so I'll be grabbing it tomorrow!
When I was a kid I thought that all Japanese films starred Godzilla. As an adult, I'm glad I've been able to see films by filmmakers like Ozu, Mizoguchi, and of course Kurosawa, and know that the best Japanese films don't take a back seat to anyone's.

I like the timeless story...

Your timeless comment reminded me of something. Although there are modern ships visible in parts of the film, I remember no motor vehicles. Everyone walked around the village. In one scene there was a poster on a building for modern tires...looked like radials, but I don't remember the brand. I wondered who the ad would be for, since nobody there seemed to own cars. (-:Interestingly, both films are rated the same, at 7.9, on IMDB.

(obviously just a guess on my part) but I know he liked uncluttered productions so the focus was on the stories...

But really... are there still brick and mortar stores renting out videos?

A good friend of mine owns a store close to me with 16k titles. The one other independent store in the area just moved to a smaller building to stay afloat, and many of his customers think he is out of business, which has benefitted my friend. There are two Blockbuster stores in the area also, but one of them is closing soon.
In the mean time my friend's business is remaining steady. He and his wife have other sources of income, and are prepared for the reality of a decline in the near future. In the mean time they offer great service and selection, and their place of business is a fun place, with many loyal customers and some really knowlegeable and friendly employees who are all film buffs.
