I need a disc player, for DVDs only, that will handle the abuse and mistreatment inflicted upon Netflix discs. Our four year old Samsung player usually hangs up on most the discs or "pixelates", if that's the correct term, on four out of five discs. My wife's solution is to skip ahead to the next scene that's playable.
My solution is to buy a player that will go right along without a hiccup. I don't need an expensive player, under $200 if they make such a beast at all. Are my expectations too high in this era of disposable players?
Peace, good beer and barbecue!
Follow Ups:
I have one LG DVD drive that seems to be particularly talented at reading bad DVDs (and CDs). It's not infallible, but I've compared it to at least a half dozen other readers and writers, and on several marginal discs it was the only one to get a clean read. With sketchy CDs, I didn't get any better results using a Plextor CDRW, so I suspect this drive may just be a happy accident.
I suggest testing all the DVD reader/writers you can put your hands on, and see if any are particularly gifted. Then use that drive to rip rental movies, and watch the rips.
Or you could hunt down one of the old DVD players that used an internal IDE DVD drive, and upgrade that with a "talented" drive if you can find one. Some Apex players used IDE loaders, as did the "Electrohome" EH-8181. And probably others.
After having several discs skip, I routinely give them a quick polish with Meguiar's plastic polish and have not had any problems since.

Given the huge number of models out there, you really need to try. I have that issue quite often, some discs look like the CD's you see in your typical college dorm. Fact is, some Toshiba will play them, other will refuse, they seem to be from about the same vintage. Cost has no effect.

will play a disc the Muse will not.
But only about 1 in 30 discs are bad for me from Netflix.
I have tried claeaning the discs with L'Art solution and it does not always help.

I don't have that problem, very often, with Netflix discs. When I do, cleaning them always takes care of it and they play fine. Try before buying a new player. Good luck.
