this film will disabuse you of that notion.
This horrendous thing attempts to make operatic material out of a tawdry love affair between an upper-class middle-aged woman and her son's young business partner.
Oh, yes, there's a death thrown in to add "gravitas."
Vile.
Despicable.
And John Adams, who did the incredibly overwrought score, should be buggy-whipped.

Did you see "The Deep End"?
Tilda was terrific in that.
actress but not in the same sense as Streep, Kidman ("The Others"), Naomi Watts, or Winslet. Tilda does have those pre-Raphaelite good looks upon which she successfully trades.

Just watched again the other night. No question she's a skilled actor.
She gave new life to the Ball Busting Bitch archetype.

iconic females: cold.
She doesn't, believably, project warmth, vulnerability, grief, deep emotional feelings (except negative ones). She tries but it seems artifice.
Haughty, domineering, independent are her attributes.
Not quite one-dimensional but....

unfortunate.
She's 50, saggy (who isn't at that age?), and her breasts aren't very appealing; certainly, not worthy of various close ups, pans, and framing shots which go on for minutes.
I don't know if she felt challenged by Winslet's familiar topless scenes, or what, but it was ill-advised.
Frankly, I felt embarrassed for her.

of emotion.
I gotta vote for Marion Cottilard.
Her eyes may be the best ever.
Winslet, while no slouch, couldn't possibly be considered one of the prettiest.
