Follow Ups:
The first two Star Wars movies were enjoyable escapist entertainment. They made no pretense of being anything more than that, but accomplished that goal extremely well. It was only with the third "film" (Or was it a toy commercial?) that the wheels fell off.
Not every film can be a dreary 4 hour black and white subtitled slice of life drama from Finland. Sometimes you just want to be entertained.
..."special effects". They would not watch films without them.
You might say that if it wasn't SW, some other film would have done that... but that doesn't make the SW less guilty.

The Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, Earthquake, et al.
These were the first really big special effects blockbusters, where visual effects so completely trumped any mundane considerations such as plot or characterization. Star Wars didn't start it.
Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture are probably what killed the disaster genre almost for good (until Titanic brought it back and gave as The Perfect Storm, Twister, Deep Impact, Armegeddon, etc.). Can't you at least give Star Wars some credit for doing that?
dissecting the film industry and society in general. There's definitely not much that will live up to your many preconceptions and rules! I pity your wife, if you have one.
