The Single Man - Stylish, smart, thematic, and filled with outstanding actors with Colin Firth's nominee performance. The story is set in 1962 and Firth is a college professor who has lost his live-in lover of 16 years. The film covers about a day and a half in which Firth has decided to end his life to end his grief and not face old age alone. The film's editing and cinematic style is powerful in its images and the characterizations of the associated people that touch his life are focused. This is an actor's movie and should be seen.

Mother - This Korean film shows what lengths a mother will go to for her only son. It is also an acting showcase for Hye-ja Kim who is a "grand dame" of Korean cinema. Her half-witted son is singled out as the prime murder suspect for the murder of a young woman. Knowing, as only a mother can, of his incapability to do such she set out on a convoluted
trail to prove his innocence. Typically Korean, the film is filled with ironies and dark humor that is trademark to their industry. The film begins slowly but the more you watch the more involved you become with "mother" and the more you realize you have seen those same traits in your own.
