live only in the present." Clooney responds to the priest, "I try to."
A nugget worth the price of admission. Clooney finds himself the star of a standard European movie, hence: mixed reviews. I found this film compelling by the fact that we are invited into the details of a hitman's life who is on the brink of waking up and getting out. We watch him practice his craft, feel his caution and his sense of paranoia and dread. We also are party to the growing loneliness of a man who is beginning to get past his prime and lose his edge.
The complaints about "not enough action" are beyond me unless Jerry Bruckheimer is writing all the reviews. You must be patient but the action is there and it is good.
Talk about action: there is enough of Violante Placidio's ripe Italian body to get pinches from attending wives and girl friends. She is a perfect example of why Ferraris still have all those curves.
Anybody who has read a few subtitles won't be instantly disappointed in this film. Give it a shot.

...the point about having "lost his edge" - as is stated in the film.
SPOILERS:
IMO, Jack succeeds (surprisingly so) in surviving due to experience and excellence at his craft, something even his handler/boss doesn't entirely comprehend.
The American was about personal metamorphosis, or transformation that comes about through realizations triggered in part by Wisdom. The Priest in the film is not without sin; he demonstrates great insight, interest and compassion for the mysteriously dark American.
The film's equation balanced well for me by the end; everyone got what they needed. Life, a sum of actions equal to redemption for some or just termination for others, becomes beautiful (heavenly) when one seeks (accepts) love.
Belying its simplicity, I loved "The American" for its pacing, tone, performances, and substance.
Great film from Anton Corbijn, whose tastefully subtle eye is welcomed relief from jittery Hollywood pop-candy.
Clooney seems to make nice films. I like the direction he is going with his work. It does not quite connect, I can not put my finger on it but the intent seems better than the outcome.
Still, a solid effort with some really nice locations, subtle music, a little action and a few Ferrari bodies to boot!

Well worth seeing. A bit slow, but very well done.

...if it's anything like Robert Duvall's "Assassination Tango" (2002), I will be pleased.
