Presuming the presentation is decent...I still love the experience of seeing a film in an actual movie theater, in a darkened auditorium, with other people. It's part ritual, part shared experience, part scale and impact- even a smallish theater screen is SO much larger than the home experience.
With a good movie in a SOTA theater the one is transported. Thrilled. Many films are, after all, designed to be seen on the big screen. Some work quite well scaled down. But there is no room in my home for a 8' screen and FP, much less anything bigger. So my preferred way to see a much anticipated film is to see it in a theater. What I miss I'm glad to see on DVD. But nothing compares IMO to seeing a movie on the big screen as a communal event.
That's why I still like to go to the theater, even though tickets can strain my budget. Happily, AMC has inaugurated $5 prices for all showings Monday through Thursday. That works well for me.
Follow Ups:
The theatre experience is absolutely worth the price of admission-and I watch plenty of Netflix discs. At least where I live, it's still 7.50 a ticket, so just don't buy popcorn. Money well spent IMHO.

"dammit"
The big one is that there is no movie theater within 50 minutes of driving that shows the films we would like to see. So while we love it, and sometimes go there (we used to do that very often in previous life...), every trip is at least $50... more with a speeding ticket. The audience I really don't miss at all.

AND honors 55 as senior!!!!! I've been on the senior teat for quite a while..it took me to 58 to admit I was a senior.
But, Regal has the highest concession prices ever. $8 for a tub of popcorn is a lot for Gritsippi. This ain't Atlanta or New Yoik City.

Ain't too much for the pleasure of a teenager putting his feet on your shoulders.
