I get really curious when I see people say "This is the best of this year"... what exactly does that mean and why does anyone care? The best of bad year... is that better than not the best of the better one?I would much rather rate films in absolute sense. Most of the time when Oscars hit I have not seen most, or all of the nominees. Usually turns out I did not miss anything.
Case in point - the Hurt Locker. A real exercise in mediocrity, totally weak film any way you look at it. Best film of 2009? Give me a break... Too bad I wanted to see what all that noise was about so I paid six bucks for On Demand. Should have had another Big Mac instead. Truth is - soon everyone will forget about that piece of crap, but somewhere in the annals there will be line: "Best of..." But so what it won the 2010 Oscars? It is still farshtunken.

...well done and realistically showed a part of the war and the effect it had on the soldiers which we hadn't seen before.
Maybe the real price we're paying for the wars is something you don't want to be reminded of or you're just becoming more of a old curmudgeon...

...that films are not inherently good or bad, but labeled subjectively - many people found Hurt Locker to be worthy of a recompense but you didn't like it but that doesn't mean it's a bad film in the same way that it having received a recompense doesn't make it a good film.
It's just a conventional way of trying to get a consensus on something but
it also makes for diversity & variety when opinions are different.
***films are not inherently good or bad, but labeled subjectively
Not sure you want to keep the door THAT wide open...

The Game with Michael Douglas.. he still looked almost youthful with dark hair then.. when was that 1997?
Something I just finished I liked a lot. A Perfect Spy based on the le Carré novel.
Ya a TV Movie.. but I like these which take great lengths of time to unfold multiplicities of character and plot developments you can't get in even a two and a half hour film. I definitely do not feel I've missed anything. Nothing gripped me and dragged me to a Theater in almost 15 years but Turner Classic Movies is the only cable channel for which I have a subscription d esite its other menu company.
worthwhile films. I scan lists of international film critics and see what films repeatedly come up. No, not foolproof, but what's the alternative? There are just too many releases around the world to shoot in the dark.
I've seen 99% of all top-of-all-time films, the "usual suspect" lists, and I bet you have, too.
As in "Best of the week..." and so on.
Shorten enough the interval and every piece of trash now has a shot at greatness! :)
My Best Film of the Week was "Stranded". The little boy in me wanted to see a sci-fi film... so I got a fair warning! :)

At least Avatar didn’t win, talk about a piece of crap! My wife dragged me there; I was nauseous most of the way through and thought I was actually going to puke a few times. “I see you.” F$%^ you!
