With wife gone to bed, I pulled the DVD of The Duelists and sat back to enjoy it.And enjoy it I did, from first to last minute... for many reasons, actually. Seen it many years ago, so this was like first time. What a great treat for any overgrown boy! Well, maybe except Patrick? :)
This might be the only Ridley Scott's work that I can take. Breathtakingly beautiful scenes coupled with very realistic action - what more would anyone need? The cavalry in the woods scene is one legends are made of.
If you have not seen it in long time - take a look... most of the film is done in one breath, with the exception of the ending that somewhat loses its pace and starts stumbling and generally getting onto your nerve. And of course a military buff gets a double treat.

I think it's his best film, and he did it on a very low budget. Reminded me of a low budget "Barry Lyndon" in some ways, and I can't help think it was an influence.
Barry Lyndon, but given the rather short time distance between the two, I would give Scott benefit of the doubt - seems difficult to me to see the film, like its style, decide to be influenced and find the proper vehicle... let alone shoot the film - all in such a short time span! :)

just saw him credited as an associate Producer for HBO/BBC's "The Gathering Storm" with Vanessa Redgrave +Albert Finney, which I much enjoyed I'll check out "The Duellists" as he can't be all bad..."American Gangster" with Denzel Washington was another one of his I enjoyed

Mostly miss...I do like Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and as I mentioned, Alien which he did right after Duelists. Strange that one has Keitel. I should check it out.
