I recently discovered these shows, find them quite enjoyable and rate them near the top of the TV drama genre. Mad Men is a character based drama with a vivid, insightful portrayal of the early 1960s Madison Avenue. Damages has Glenn Close as a super ruthless lawyer and Leverage is much lighter with Timothy Hutton masterminding a team of benevolent crooks.
Follow Ups:
it's probably not for everybody but if you're not turned off by the subject matter then you should enjoy the excellent writing and acting. Cranston is da man!
Great show! Comes to mind whenever I see an RV.

"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
stunning acting, music + script

A taut, suspenseful drama in year one with a great backstory. Then they escaped in the Season 1 finale, and everything went to Hell and back as the writers had to invent increasingly more unbelievable situations for them to escape from.

My tennis coach is very hi on it.
I'd also add Justified on FX, the second season (or is it the back ten from season 1?) will air shortly.
Also, and I've recommended this before, on AMC, Rubicon. Very dark, intriguing, complicated, mostly unknown actors, and, most importantly, government/bidness conspiracies and red flags abound!! Season 1 s/b on DVD now or shortly.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
is in every episode, a terrific mind screw
I did not like Damages or Leverage
Mad Men has lost some steam but I am hooked
The Good Wife is smart and worth a look

probably means no season two.
"I'd like to own a squadron of tanks"
quality shows get booted. I hope they keep Rubicon at least another year.
I agree Breaking Bad is good, it sets the standard for over the top viewing.

It's a shame; I really liked the show.
thanks for the update...

...as far as TV shows goes is the BBC series MI-5 (called Spooks in the UK) if you like espionage thrillers. Eight seasons are available on DVD. As the series progresses the cast changes with new characters being introduced. With good writing, direction and acting the shows are generally excellent and a personal favorite. Start from the beginning. Generally speaking each season gets progressively better in my opinion.Another BBC six episode series I recommend is State Of Play. I found it to be much better than the Hollywood re-make with Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck.
Second Sight, a BBC detective series with Clive Owen is also good.
Last but not least is the BBC Wallander series based on Henning Mankell's novels with Kenneth Branagh playing a dour Swedish detective. Two seasons available on DVD that I liked a lot.
The Brits do some nice work in the detective/crime/thriller genres. One I've been meaning to see but haven't got round to is the Red Riding Trilogy.

I've never seen a show that ties characters, sociology and history so deftly.
Haven't seen season 4 yet, but I heard it was the best yet. First three seasons blew me away.
