I would not worry much about the Renaissance or ancient Greek - they are too distant to be relevant. I am talking about today.
I suspect if the film had something like "For the Grace of Virgin Mary" (sorry, I made it up, I am not sure what the proper language would be, don't mean to offend anyone) at the opening, it would have created a curious reaction in you... no?

onto whose face I'd have a difficult time not spitting. And Wagner. Borges was an ultra-political conservative; he's my favorite author. There are plenty of excellent Catholic authors in this modern day;I don't care one way or the other; I certainly don't research their faith! No, to be specific, it doesn't matter to me what the guy said in his film dedication. If the film sucks, it sucks.
Yes the mire of controversy will always cloud the genius as a filmmaker that Ms Riefensthal was.Maybe she grabbed the "moment' and ran with it- was she to be interned if she did not "cooperate"with the Reich?
Her talent if misguided by political forces was undeniably a masterwork as her legacy shows.
I worked a Dive boat out of Papua New Guinea in the late 90's she was a passenger on
one of our trips-- still Scuba Diving at 92!!
Incidentally if her "boss" had been accepted into the Austrian Fine Art Academy-- we might not have seen the world in turmoil over those years.
Adolph's submission pics for his entrance exam-- he failed-- not to bad an effort though-no?

One might ask a different question - if that bitch did not make her powerful films, would the war had possibly been a few days shorter and perhaps few thousand lives could have been saved?
It is interesting to see the "humanists" salivate over well produced Nazi propaganda.

If I recall she put 70 on her Waiver-- but in PNG you could dive at any age.
She falsified her Dive accreditation anyhow at 72 she declared 52 for her age-ha!
As for the other- I would'nt know if there was hanky panky!

what the Nazis did, dismissing works out-of-hand because they didn't fit the "agenda."
The German Impressionist school of art had some magnificent artists. I don't know how many were Nazis, I think none of the greats, but that wouldn't diminish their art, in my mind. I think TS Eliot was a sympathizer at some point. Should we dismiss this great poet? How many English actors had supported Hitler during the 30s? Few people have crystal balls. A lunatic such as Hitler is to blame. I don't think any of the people I mentioned knew a Holocaust would come, nor that it was inevitable. To argue otherwise is to say the Holocaust wasn't unusual, that it was a known outcome of such speech.
Perhaps you could link us to my post where I suggest burning their books.
You can't hide from the simple truth that what happened in Germany (and some other countries) happened with the help, either active or passive, of many participants. For this reason I watch Leni's work as a documentary evidence, not a work of art - as too much is rolled into those reels.
Yes, many people supported the Nazi, and many of them got what they deserved... shame that some didn't. She was kind of in between. In some cases what the French did to the collaborators sounds like a good start.

Those that engaged, specifically, in Nazi-led anti-Jewish propaganda are hideous. Those that knew about it, but did nothing, are less so; the Nazis, after all, eliminated opposition. They did exactly what the Soviet communists did: they invited friends, family, and acquaintances to rat out those that spoke out against them.
One can say she received a fair punishment for her role... others might disagree, but her role was certainly not that of a quiet person.
I don't recall seeing specific cases of anti-Jewish propaganda in her films, but that is secondary, I think, given the nature of the regime she promoted.

...of Tin's beliefs, I'd have to say that that sort of dedication wouldn't affect me one way or another.
To me it would be meaningless and I'd pretty much ignore it.
I'd judge the film on its merits like any other.
While I might not share the filmaker's beliefs, everyone is entitled to believe whatever they want.
I have family and friends who are very religious and it doesn't affect the way I see them or our relationship.
Their radical political beliefs, however, are a very different story.
