Why him? Well, as I was watching that opus, The Dreamers kept popping up in my mind - the parallels are inescapable, except instead of an impotent old fart we now have an unattractive French woman... but apparently Hell knows no boundaries! As far as the film itself - I think that is the first one where the genitals are given more screen time than actors' faces... this probably beats the Vagina Monologue for the simple reason here it is all real - living and breathing... and VERY close up.
Would I call it porn? I suspect about 80% of viewers would, but be it as it may, it far outreaches the former "Best Film to Show Your Visiting Mother in Law" - the infamous In the Realm of Senses. So if your MIF is still sticking around after the ITRoS, pull this one, and I can guarantee you the room will be vacant in no time at all.
In fact I can't imagine ANY woman sit through this abomination.
I will spare you the details, just take my word for it - they do represent the New Frontier... :)
Fortunately, the film is short at one hour and ten minutes... in reality it feels much longer, as you keep wishing for the end long before the best part hits you on your head.
And believe me - it WILL!
Ah... yes... the director... it is Catherine Breillat - you might remember her Fat Girl.

I guess sharing a drink shall never be the same... eh?

I actually, I wouldn't say enjoy, but appreciate Breillat's particular and unusual perspective. Not for everyone, but there are few like her. Haven't seen "Anatomy of Hell" but seen most of her other's.
***Haven't seen "Anatomy of Hell"
Take a look... you are in for a treat! I kid you not - some scenes there are like nothing we have seen before this side of porn. Others are apparently there for just their shock value.
She seems to be oblivious of the fact that things that happen naturally between the loving partners and the same things on the screen are two different cattle of fish. Some of those natural things will look revolting... and they do.
I have only seen two of her other works - Fat Girl and The Last Mistress, and I think she has strong misconception of the way men see life and sex. Maybe she never had a man in her life, or someone hurt her deeply before... I dunno... but I would not be surprised.

Your statement re: "her misconception about the way men see life" says something about how you view the film. It isn't about how men see it, it's about the way she sees it. These are very personal films she makes. They are often not easy to watch, yet there is a poignance to them. Clearly she doesn't have the most positive view of relationships, but she has a very strong point of view about them and about sexuality of women.

Strong points of view are abound... that doesn't automatically make them interesting. She is not some self-appointed speaker for women.Words about how men see life and sex are not mine, it is hers. She keeps talking about it through the movie.

No. She has a strong point of view about herself. You need to be able to look at her films, or at least try to, from her point of view, not your's. Some filmmakers make films with broader themes. Some filmmakers don't attempt to make personal statements. I think she is a very strong filmmaker. Not perfect, but a unique one (Can you name another female director that deals with female sexuality so head-on?).
In the meantime I can assure you she is not speaking for my wife. I strongly dislike the self-appointed advocates. But I have to admit - the shovel (pick?) episode is something that will be remembered.

Why does she have to be an advocate? Why can't she simply make a personal film. So it doesn't touch you? Okay, fine.
By the way, have you seen any of her other films? Forgive me if you have mentioned this already.
I doubt she was making a film about herself, given what I know about her. Usually only those personal things that have more universal meaning and resonance make good stories. I mentioned the two other films of hers that I have seen, perhaps I have seen more, but did not register. But we are discussing something you have not yet seen, so this is pointless.

none have made much of an impression.
Catherine Breillat's vision might not be for everyone but she is an important and talented film maker who is not a friend of compromise.

Fat Girl a classic? I think you have dropped your standards.

devilishly insightful view into the world of a less-than-attractive young woman.
I think we shall indeed disagree.
Or you are speaking of Fat Girl? Don't confuse me, it is evening and I am looking forward to watching the Expendables.
