It gets notice in some circles. Chrysler's revival of the Dodge Challenger was due in part to this movie. Tarantino's Death Proof references it heavily - the second set of girls go for a joyride in a Vanishing Point Challenger. I became interested in it and other "car" movies from that era through reading/seeing interviews and the hype for Death Proof/Planet Terror. IMO, Vanishing Point is the best of the "car/road" movies I've sampled from that era which admittedly is not very many. (Too many genres, too little time.) Others of interest are Two-Lane Blacktop, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) and of course the homage Death Proof. Some say Death Proof is boring, too chatty, etc. but Kurt Russell is excellent and the lengthy chase between Russell's Charger (he drives a Nova in the beginning) and the girls' Challenger is terrific.
Follow Ups:
You can add The California Kid to the list. It's got an early 30s 3 window Ford coupe. They made an editing goof.In one scene the Chevy motor briefly changes to a Ford motor.
Also there is Badlands. There's something mesmerizing about a black '60
Caddy sedan barreling through the unpaved plains at night. Not a road flick but, hey.
An honorable mention is The Car from '77.A badassed driverless sinisterly customized Lincoln Mark III terrorizes a western town.
Goofy yes,but I like it anyway.
The Driver: ( 1978 )Walter Hill, great driving scenes in this one!
GW
looks like a real hoot!! I like desert settings too. It seems vaguely familiar but I could be confusing it with Christine. Thanks.
Oh man, you'll love The Car.The apparently supernaturally driven Lincoln has not a regular horn,it has an AIR horn, like trucks have.
After each hit and run over it blasts the air horn triumphantly!
Dual exhausts, open pipes of course.Matte black paint job, lowered roof & the front end is suggestive of a face.I'd say more but no spoilers from
here on in.....get The Car.
I sat in my basement TV room by myself laughing like an idiot...out loud..over and over again...and the sound WAY too loud!
Baba-Booey to you all!

I had the same reaction. (I'm a Tarantino sucker.) Then, while still a little giddy from the experience, I made my wife watch the chase with me. She was actually impressed with the stunts and enjoyed Russell's transformation to li'l b*tch.
If you haven't seen Machete yet...well it kinda sucks. You are probably already familiar with 'The Hidden', but if not buy it today!
Baba-Booey to you all!
Saw it mentioned here before (probably by you). It's in my Amazon wish list just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I don't think it's available direct from Amazon but from "other sellers".
