Where the Sidewalk Ends has all the sins of the era, you have to adjust your scale when watching it, but then it becomes very rewarding... definitely one of the better films of that period and genre.
From a totally different era and continent - comes Flores de Otro Mundo. It strips the relationships of the common layer of superficiality so often seen today. You can say the ending is sad... you can say it reflects life. Be it as it may, if you like films about people, put this one on your list.
Follow Ups:
"Detour," the '45 version. Every time I've seen it, I appreciate it more. Like a short, vicious hook, it is terribly effective, much more so than you'd expect. Along with Bette Davis's character in, "Of Human Bondage," this one is the most savage woman ever portrayed on the screen.
I'm gettin' senile.
I indulge in them and will list a few I enjoyed.Somewhere in the Night w / John Hodiak
Human Desire w/Gloria Grahame and Glen Ford
Border Incident w/Ricardo Montalban
Out of the Past w/ Robert Mitchum
D.O.A. w/Edmond O'Brien
Cloak and Dagger w/ Gary Cooper
House of Bamboo w Robert Stack and Robert Ryan
Act of Violence w/ van hefflin
Fallen Angel w/ Dana Andrews
The Shanghai Gesture w/ Gene Tierney
....

As I started going down you list, I quickly discovered that Netflix doesn't have them on stream!
My DVD channel is closed for now, my wife owns it! :)

Oh, she knows more about them than I do, and she loves them, it is just these days she needs comedies.

film noir. I'll take your suggestion and make a stop in that Spanish village. We're thinking of a visit to Madrid this year and I love hearing Castilian Spanish.
