...the only problem with these young actresses is in your head - I think you need your eyesight and hearing checked. Seriously. You can't tell the difference between a 14 year old and a 21 year old???
Better be careful, that can get you arrested in some states.
Note to Tin: all thin young women do not look alike. Not all women with brown hair look alike. These two actresses aren't ringers and aren't interchangable.
The main thing the two characters have in common is that neither actress wore much "obvious" make-up to play them - Mia because Jane is supposed to be "plain" and Hailee because Mattie is a kid.
.
The characters as played are not especially similar. They are both set in the 19th century, and it is pretty much a given that young femail heroines - males for that matter - may be "spunky" (although I wouldn't describe Jane or Mia's portrayal of her as "spunky", which just shows how easy it apparently is for you to miss the point). But the resemblance as written and portrayed ends with the barest of superficialities. Hailee's Mattie and Mia's Jane are not much alike other than being strong females, and their quests and characters are very different.
Aside from the age difference, these two young actresses don't look that much alike to me. Hollywood hasn't made either of them what they are, although certainly their careers have and will continue to involve them in American studio produced films. No one in tinseltown manufactured these two young women to be in the same mold - the studio system has been GONE for 40+ years, Tin.
For future reference:
Mia Wasikowski is a 21 year old Australian with a long string of credits starting in 2004, primarily in TV and film down under. She had a bit part in Amelia, got a break in Tim Burton's Alice and her only other American movie to date has been surprise hit independent film The Kids Are All Right, not exactly a big Hollywood production.
Hailee is a 14 year old whose major debut was in True Grit, shot when she was 13. She's done shorts and some minor roles on TV.
I'm guessing, since her hair was blonde, you don't mix up either of these with Jennifer Lawrence?
Follow Ups:
exasperation aside.
Both are homely brunettes, interchangeable, as portrayed and presented.
Spunky is the Hollywood-style with young women parts. No depth, just attitude. Mia is on screen for several hours and does nothing to distinguish herself. It is a singularly flat performance, one note. Dull portrayal, dull appearance.
We disagree, so what? I don't think either actress is very interesting. But I think fine acting is rare, indeed.
No reason to get excited, the thief he kindly spoke...
We shall never agree on this...the depth is there in the performance, even if you can't ddetect it. Invisible to you doesn't mean it's invisible to others.
Hailee is outstanding in True Grit, Mia is excellent in Jane Eyre, and neither, IMO at least, are homely brunettes.
I'm not alone here.
Here's praise from Andrew O'Hehir's favorable review in Salon:
"Mia Wasikowska's performance as the ultimate Gothic-novel heroine should propel this remarkable 21-year-old Australian to another level entirely. In my recent conversation with Fassbender, he compared Wasikowska to a young Meryl Streep, and now I see it. Jane must be alternately ferocious and vulnerable, modest in manner yet enormous in spirit, and utterly unwilling to compromise her moral code. She has to embody all the story's contradictory themes -- the idea, for instance, that women are the stronger sex, and strongest of all because their destinies are limited and they must so often be subservient -- without ever saying so, and Wasikowska does this in almost miraculous fashion."

...pifle.
He's appealing in a paler way that Newman was devastatingly attractive. No where near the chops, but he has his uses...he's a very entretaining sleazebag lawyer in The Lincoln Lawyer. But no one is confusing him with Newman.
And no one is saying Mia is the next great thing. Just plenty of viewers and critics disagree with your assessment of her performance in JE.

Mia Wasikowska quote re trying an acting career rather than following a career in ballet:
"There were a few films that got me interested in acting and cinema. I'm Polish, but I grew up in Australia. My mom used to have a lot of European cinema playing in the house, so I'd catch bits and pieces of films. I really, really loved Krzysztof Kieslowski's films, especially A Liberdade é Azul (1993) and A Fraternidade é Vermelha (1994)."
OK, they are small boned. Both slightly elfin.
Mia is 5'4". Hailee is 5'7".
I give you that much.
Still, better check your eyes and stay outta jail.
